The CGI was marginally better than I expected for TV. Lightyears ahead of the awful final season of 24.
But yeah, the writing sucked.
Also, c'mon, the father broke out of a maximum security prison OFF-CAMERA in about 5 minutes. Why? Why bother with ANY of this? The only real plot result of the 15 minutes they dedicated to the future was that captain whatshisname had to be a farmer for part of the show and slowly earn the respect of Stephen Lang. So what? We know he's a selfish jerk, as is the whole family, because he felt another kid was more important than the planet. I don't think the writers wanted us feeling that way about the 5 main characters. And we know he is impulsive because he punched a cop that wasn't really being a jerk about it (they were calmly, gently reaching for the girl, not angrily grabbing.) And sure, it made the stupid son angsty and annoyed at his father, but he's a stupid angsty stereotype and they could have found any reason.
Why have that subplot? It doesn't seem to go anywhere, and having him break out of prison off-screen just seemed wasteful. Why not just have him going back to be a cop, and why not have the son resentful because he left someone behind. All the negative implications of that stupid plot are gone and you cut the stupid time in the stupid future by like 75%.
