Verno wrote on Sep 28, 2011, 12:51: It's hard to moderate opinion. I don't see how the comments section here differs from anywhere else It's less open to new people. Someone comes in here and posts something casually stupid and they're immediately flamed and chased off. They don't return. I've posted on a few messageboards that turned into that. They all died a slow death, as new people don't show up to backfill old people that stop coming around quite as much.
It's a hard thing to fix, but it's something that happens when the regulars are a small group with largely the same attitude and very closely overlapping opinions. If someone doesn't have that same attitude and same opinion they won't join.
There's what, maybe 15-20 regular posters here? We're probably losing them faster than gaining new blood. And there's no denying we're fairly closed-minded - no matter what game you like or how you like to play it you're going to get called an idiot. I'll step up and say that I'm one of the first ones to challenge a new poster if he/she posts something stupid, or something that just seems way out there. However, I will remain cordial in doing so, and typically ask why they feel that way. If that person is inclined to have a normal argument about it, that's awesome.
99% of the time, however, that poster will then turn to personal insults because they have no defense for their stupid comment (or they'll turn to absolutely ludicrous straw men arguments), at which point they get flamed. (usually not even by me, though I'll call someone a fucking twat if they deserve it.)
Quite frankly, if you're going to post something stupid, you should be prepared to defend it. Someone who thinks they can act stupid and just get away with it should go post on a site for functionally-deficient twelve year olds. (aka Kotaku, or the Xbox live forums.)
Any new poster who just posts something normal or anything just gets a friendly greeting and that's that.
Sadly, both those types of poster are very rare. The large majority of "new" posters just come here to whine that Blues is full of people who hate everything. I have no patience for trolling cunts like that. We already have a few dozen tardbillies who do nothing but whine every day that nobody here likes anything, any and all evidence to the contrary be fucking damned, the last thing we need is more of those mouthbreathers. My ignore list already sometimes makes 80% of comments show as hidden.
Whether that particular circumstance is indicative of the comment section here at Blues, I don't know. We can be overly negative at times (though nowhere near as pervasive the wankers keep whining about), but personally I don't mind that someone complains about the gaming industry, since (let's be honest), it's mostly a giant pile of shit right now. Whining about people whining serves very little purpose, but if it's directly aimed at a particular piece of whining, okay. Most of those comments aren't aimed at anyone, however. It's just some random drive-by dipshit who whines "WAAAAH BLUES IS SO NEGATIVE!"
Bye. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Apparently it never even occurs to these dumbasses that their whining adds just as much to the overal (perceived) negativity as the person who was originally complaining about game A or B. No, THEIR whining somehow contributes to the greater experience of mankind.
Seriously, are those the kinds of commenters you want MORE of on here? Fuck off with those clowns. I wish Blue would wield the banhammer far, far FAR more often than he currently does. It took like a year before we finally got rid of Zeph.
In the end, however, let's be honest: It's not as if the comments are what drives Blues. I read it before I commented, and I'd continue to read it if there were no comments at all. It's a service Blue provides that brings in no revenue (well, I guess it's a page hit, but still), and I doubt that even 1% of his readers bother commenting.
So in the grand scheme of things, the comments section isn't all that important.
That's just my take on it.
