IW on PC Modern Warfare 3

An interview on GameSpy chats with Robert bowling of Infinity Ward about the Windows PC edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, their upcoming military shooter sequel. He reiterates all the PC-specific features the game will offer that were missing from Modern Warfare 2, says the server browser will only offer the ability to sort by ping, changes to matchmaking algorithms, that they are not certain whether user-hosted servers can be ranked, the reason for removing dedicated servers from MW2 and adding them back to MW3, cheat prevention, how MW2's system requirements are slightly higher than MW3's, their uncertainty over whether they will ever support user-created mods again, and more.

Of course they don't want this game to last too long, cos you wont want to buy the next crappy cod game on the same engine yet again that comes with the same standard gameplay that 5yr olds could master..

Releasing the mod tools would be a colossal undertaking for them, also due to the complexity of the game engine used you would never be able to figure out how it all works.

That's all so much bullshit. The fact is they don't want the game to have any longevity or any good mods that will prevent people from buying their DLC and the annual iterations of this shitty title, same as COD.

I was being facetious, but this is their general B.S. excuse for not releasing mod tools these days.

This Bowling guy really is a jackass, isn't he?

I don't really think so. He's just doing his job as a PR guy. Given all that had happened at IW over the past 2 years, his position is certainly unenviable.

Complicated?

It cant be more complicated than writing a mod for Doom3. And id made *zero* docs for qeR: that was all community-based.

Worldcraft was awesome...I just with Ben updated it a hell of a lot more often than he did ;-)

Worldcraft was pretty easy. Valve bought Worldcraft for that very reason.

But if you're not supporting tools you probably don't want to give them away. People will always look a gift horse in the mouth, it's just the way it works. Inevitably email boxes will be full of questions, and they don't want engineers taking the time to deal with it.

Hell, these are the reasons why id isn't doing engine licensing anymore and they're forgoing millions of dollars that way.

Do you guys really think this is to sell DLC? Honestly? Seriously? Did the Quake 2 expansion packs sell less because of mods? Did Blue Shift sell less because of mods? Occam's razor, eh?

This is what I never understood. Quake used QuakeC. Here it is. Good luck. Final result is some of the best games and mods of all time. And mapping/modelling was the same. HL had Worldcraft(or whatever it was) and it wasn't any easier.

...their uncertainty over whether they will ever support user-created mods again...

What he really meant to say was, "With all the money we have and are making on DLC, there is no reason for us to support the community and their user-created mods/maps".
