Wasn't that exactly my point? I saw the screenshots, watched the trailers... and still didn't have a clue what the game was trying to be.

The launch trailer actually does show a lot of gameplay. Granted, they turned off the HUD and moved the camera to make it more cinematic, but all trailers do that.

I don't know, if I'm even remotely interested in a game, I tend to read previews and view unofficial media so the marketing doesn't really affect me.

Eh? I thought it was pretty clear that this was an action game. The demo made it even more clear.
Have you even seen the media they've put out for this game?

Steam page:
Image 1, Image 2, Image 3, Image 4, Image 5

None of those give you any idea about the gameplay. Not one is an in-game screenshot. They're just designed to show off what the engine can achieve. And look at the launch trailer - that could just as easily be an in-game cinematic for Dawn Of War II. I have a keen interest in the franchise, I enjoyed the previous games and had been casually following Space Marine... and I had no idea what sort of game it was. You cannot ignore that this is a very different genre from the previous games, meaning they should take extra steps in the material that they release to make sure it is clear.

Relic / THQ aren't the only ones guilty of this, don't get me wrong. But compare the material put out by Bethesda for Skyrim, Metro: Last Light or Battlefield 3 - there is no confusion. THQ messed up.

I think Relic / THQ completely dropped the ball on this title. Just look at all the promotional screenshots and videos they put out. None of the screenshots give you any idea what type of game it is, which is a serious mistake as their previous games fall into the strategy genre.

I think Relic / THQ completely dropped the ball on this title. Just look at all the promotional screenshots and videos they put out. None of the screenshots give you any idea what type of game it is, which is a serious mistake as their previous games fall into the strategy genre. And the videos are even worse, with the majority focusing on cinematics using the in-game engine. It wasn't until I saw the video review on Gametrailers that I even knew what the game was about... and I bought their previous games and enjoyed them. The same was true with Dawn Of War II during the build-up to release - they showed lots of close-ups using the in-game engine but didn't release screenshots in normal gameplay.

Developers / publishers need to release promotional material that actually relates to the game. I mean, you only have to look at Dead Island to see the problems with releasing a trailer that doesn't relate to the game.

I like it when companies release developer diaries, as these give you a good impression of how the game will play. That's why I liked the coverage of Skyrim and Metro: Last Light. Whereas I think id Software really dropped the ball with RAGE - they focused too much on videos of racing and very few, until recently, of the FPS mechanics. I mean, how many times did you see in interviews that they had to state it was actually a FPS game? Too many. But when I saw the camera footage from Japan on Gametrailers it gave me a completely different impression of the game... and a much better one, at that.

Ridiculous, though given the reviews I'm not in any hurry to grab this one.

The game is great, I think the reviews are a bit harsh, they compain about the story not being amazing(and its not, but its still entertaining) - yes its not perfect, but it is really fun game and you get absorbed by the experience.

easily worth a purchase if you can get cheaply.

I am looking for a good deal on this one. I loved the demo, and I also gave the full version a try on OnLive. It let me play the first 30 minutes and I like the game a lot.

As soon as I see a good deal I'll grab the game, but I am not in the hurry because way too many games are coming out in a very short period of time that I want to play.

I'm in a similar spot... I really enjoyed the demo; especially the jump mission (being OP is fun). But it's not worth $60 to me (I'm new to 40k, and not a huge fan of it, or regular Warhammer).

I don't have any games on the horizon though, but I'm trying to be super productive (both at work and on my hobby stuff, so really, 80-100h weeks), and some games get in the way : ) At least no massives are due out any time soon : ) Or rather, at least GW2 isn't coming out soon : )

Thank god for the push-to-talk and mute options. I'm not sure they really thought through what having constant voice communications always ON really meant for the game. 10+ mouth breathers, random music, screaming children, barking dogs, and the one jackass who uses desktop speakers and sends every one of those other sounds through your ears a SECOND time... ugh. At least they pushed that feature out quickly, once they had some feedback on it.

I'm not trying to be funny but if you only wanted the title for co-op then wouldn't it make sense to buy if AFTER it included that feature, not before. Afterall, history has shown us many developers that promise features but cannot or do not deliver. If it underperforms then there is an obvious incentive to abandon plans for support and move on to something that will earn them money instead of cost it, despite the bad will it generates.

Also, buying it immediately undermines your position, as if they look at the sales figures and they don't see an increase in sales after the release of co-op they may consider that it wasn't successful.

Yes that would have been, but I had it pre ordered through steam months before they announced the coop patch being added. so I jsut waited figuring that Relic will kepe their word. we will see!!

Exactly, except EA was ultra-shitty with that move as they released it for consoles but couldn't be fucked releasing it on PC. They already had the content but decided it wasn't worth the effort and that it would be better to focus on Battlefield 3. But are those people going to boycott BF3? Nope, so EA saved themselves a bit of money and will inevitably do the same again.

NEVER buy a game based upon promises. Buy a game for what is already available, not what might be.

So I learned - never, NEVER buy a game based on a feature that a developer promises to deliver at some point in the future. Because they lie.

They said "In about a month" not "In the first month" and it's only been about 3 weeks.

According to most gamers, the words 'maybe', 'would like to', 'will try to', mean that those bastard developers didn't deliver what they PROMISED...

Just saying... : )
