Out of the Blue

Okay, I'm inspired by this reddit thread sent along by Ant. I've noted before I have a bunch of cords and cables that are currently a life-sized homage to the flying spaghetti monster, but this looks like a manageable way to solve this, though I don't know how long it will take to save the tubes from inside a thousand rolls of paper towel.

Are you guys serious about the toilet paper rolls? I mean...it's something that my grandmother did and I think my parents did. And, I place the same opinion on it now as I did then.

Look...businesses which make money wrapping up cords use twist ties...I'm sure if rolls were better they would use rolls so that their product looks better than the competition. What is wrong with using the twist ties? Twist ties are very economical and look good and they come with the cords. Trust me...those toilet paper rolls degrade after awhile and start looking ragged and ugly. Plus, it's almost impossible to remove all the tissue from them, so most of the rolls will be disgusting. And also if the toilet paper used perfume then your cords will also smell like that. Additionally, they sit very close to the toilet and are made of cardboard which is an absorbent material so some of the fumes, odors, and bacteria will get trapped in the cardboard. If you want to do something constructive with the cardboard roll then recycle it along with all the other cardboard and paper.

When I buy something I put all the twist ties into a container...I currently am using one of those chow mien noodle cans, but any container about that size works. When I need to wrap a cord up I just choose one from the container that fits. Really...most of these "life tips" are ridiculous and designed to get people to do stupid things because they haven't figured out how to do something themselves or never had parents that showed them the proper way to do something.

Heck, I can give out lots of genius ways to do things. Let's see...something that everyone has to do, but nobody really likes doing is laundry right? Well...usually people buy a clothes hamper or laundry basket to put their dirties in. Why? When there is a perfectly good space under the bed? Yeah...I'm joking. Another idea would be to use one of the drawers in the dresser to put the dirty clothes in. Again...I'm kidding. Or heck, just throw the dirties into the washer...they will wind up there anyway...then when it's almost full you can just add some soap and start the machine...no longer any need to lug hampers or laundry baskets full of dirties. Heck, closets are where the laundry machines should go anyway so that when you pull the clothes out of the dryer you can fold and hang them up right away.

What do I do? I buy two laundry baskets...one has clean stuff and the other has dirties...it wouldn't be very hygienic to throw clean clothes into the same basket you kept dirties in for a week or two would it? But, I would guess that 80% of the people in the world who use laundry baskets just use the same one for both clean and dirty clothes. They never think anything about it because they never notice the baskets getting dirty...duh...the clean clothes keep wiping the dirt off!

But, I would guess that someone will suggest something and everyone will wonder why they never thought of that before. I guess this kind of proves that the power of suggestion is very strong and overrides the sensibilities of even the sanest persons.

it boils down to people not taking responsibility for their own health. they demand things like its an entitlement. nothing i hate more than a very large person taking up two to three seats in an airplane and refusing to pay for the extra space. i dont envy flight attendants who try to work things out by asking others to move seats in order to accommodate extra large people. it sometimes causes animosity between passengers when the flight is fully booked.

You also have to remember it's far cheaper to eat unhealthy than it is to eat healthy, and the latter actually requires some thought and effort. Obesity is very much tied in with socio-economic status. One of my friends is a physician who used to work out of Detroit and he'd tell us all about the obesity ward there and he was all politic about how the economics ties into it all, which is quite sad.

However, it can also be said that it's very much a political issue as well as you don't see those levels of obesity in poorer countries where the diets, while simple, are much more natural and lack all of the processed crap we see everyday. Fat and sodium are the two biggest culprits we have to contend with. Even with low-fat options at most places the sodium is through the roof.

As someone who's generally worked in higher-end restaurants most of his life, I know that even a higher quality of cuisine doesn't equate to healthy, and is in fact most times, the opposite. Yet, people believe that if they're sitting down to fine dining that it's somehow good for them. I can't count the times when I've had the guys on the line whip me up something not on the menu that actually is healthy because I'd have been dead long ago eating off the standard menus.

Then there's lifestyle. Let's face it. Most people out there live pretty sedentary lifestyles which are the antithesis of how we evolved. You're supposed to get your 4-8 hours sleep than pretty much be on the go the rest of the day with breaks here and there. As it is, most people sleep 8 hours. Get up, go to work, sit around another 8 hours, go home sit around another few hours and then the cycle repeats. I'm glad I don't live that lifestyle or I'd be big as house.

I'd say the genetic aspect actually falls more into the psychological category with people having a predisposition to eat cetain foods. It's also an issue of simple will-power too. We all walk by the bakery or ice-cream section in the supermarket and think, 'Oh, that'd be nice.' and once in a while you do - as you should. However, most of the time you have to excercise that will and say 'No.' There's also the how of how you eat. In short, there are many factors that contribute to obesity. There's no one size fits all solution either. Regardless, the biggest thing begins with people actually making the effort themselves to try and reduce their weight. If they're not even going to make the attempt to eat right and excercise than there's no help for them.

Being "a skinny guy" and having almost eeryone in our family fairly skinny, I used to have the attitude that fat people chose to be fat. I agree that is not entirely true, but I don't think the current trend of more obese people in the last 30+ years is entirely genetic.

But some of the "genetic" % is those who have parents who have large intakes of empty calories and eat a lot of fast food and hve passed that on to their children though child birth and also daily activities. Fast food has taken over our society as an accepted norm, which is unfortunate.

Marketing of fast food, pop, and junk food is so much more readily available to children and there is a McDonalds on every corner. It makes me sick when I see people bringing their kids in droves to McD's and other fast food places.

Is there a larger % of people who chose to be overweight over the % of those that are TRULY genetic? Yes.

The issue is a symptom of a larger problem: the obesity epidemic in America (and other nations). I think that many people are hostile to overweight people b/c they view it as a choice: you are choosing to be fat, so don’t complain about how it inconveniences you.

Of course we do have some control over what we eat and what our body fat % is, but it’s not that simple. Genetics plays a role: some people have genes that make them more susceptible to being obese, and some people have genes that make them less fat. Also, our bodies are designed to seek out sugary, salty, and fatty foods and products designed to feed these desires are cheap and common. These “foods” offer no nutrition, but do stimulate dopamine receptors in our brains just like hard drugs like cocaine and heroin. Over time, this response diminishes causing us to eat more. Not only that, the government spends about $10 million a year in healthy eating campaigns, while the food industry spends $11 billion. And you can bet they aren’t advertising broccoli. Not do you crave these tastes, but you’re being constantly reminded to consume them.

We’ve been trying the “personal responsibility” path for decades, and it is failing, as more people are more overweight each year. Just like alcohol and tobacco, these products need to be regulated with restrictions on advertising, warning labels, and sin taxes to help cover the costs of the medical issues they cause. And more needs to be spent on healthy eating promotion. The campaign to reduce smoking in the US has been very effective, with usage rates falling from over 50% a few decades ago down to less than 20% today. Diabetes (to name just one of many diseases caused or exacerbated by obesity), a largely preventable disease, affects 350 million people worldwide. That’s more than the population of the USA.

So, while larger seats may provide temporary relief for some people, it does nothing to address the root cause. And rude comments only display commenters' ignorance and lack of compassion.

Yeh, good call Blue.

My drawer at work is a huge mess, since I have to keep around old Serial cables and other legacy things. So it's just a big artist's depiction of the flying spaghetti monster.

Instead of twisty-ties and things, just saving some tubes looks like it works well.

I went to ziplock bags and tupperware containers. Works great and keeps everything orderly. I then put them in plastic boxes by type of cord.

I'm big, really big, and only go to a fast food place maybe 2 times a year. But I've noticed some places with the built-in seating like that walking through the mall or street or something.

He makes point when he mentions pregnant women and the handicapped, a case which is missed in the comments that instead wish to say a lot of hateful things.

Honestly, the only thing I find memorable about the article is the comments: the story itself is a non-issue. The comments are hateful and vile, yet society has no problem with people making them (even in-person). Even adults will chuckle when they hear someone say it to someone else, like it was flippin' middle school.

I mean, change things around even slightly... mentioning a person's flamboyant clothing / odd tatoos / over-doing it on "supportive garments" or surgeries and the person would be villified. Yet making fun of the fat guy is OK.

Just venting, had someone blow up at me at the store the other day. I wanted to punch his lights out.

LOL

That is good.

Of course, if too many people like it, Lucas will add it to his next release and then inexplicably lose the original source material for the pre-Alderaan-retcon stuff.

So, perhaps we should keep quiet about it.
