Same-Gender Relationships a Post-Launch Feature in The Old Republic

The Star Wars: The Old Republic Forums have an official statement saying same-gender relationships with companion characters will come in a post-release update to BioWare's Star Wars MMORPG (thanks Massively). Here's word on how love can eventually bloom for star-crossed couples like Han and Chewie, Jabba the Hutt and Salacious B. Crumb, and of course, all those storm troopers:
Due to the design constraints of a fully voiced MMO of this scale and size, many choices had to be made as to the launch and post-launch feature set. Same gender romances with companion characters in Star Wars: The Old Republic will be a post-launch feature. Because The Old Republic is an MMO, the game will live on through content expansions which allow us to include content and features that could not be included at launch, including the addition of more companion characters who will have additional romance options.

I'm surprised Lucas is letting this fly. It's a good thing, but not enough to warrant a purchase of this game.

Because after 5 years of development there was no way to fit this in.

After 5 years of development you'd be hard pressed to figure out where that dev time went.
