Rumored Syndicate Details Promise a "Visceral FPS Experience"

A post on NeoGAF offers purportedly leaked details and screenshots on the Syndicate remake long rumored (or perhaps confirmed) to be in the works at Starbreeze Studios (thanks nin via Kotaku). According to the post, the images and info were posted to EA's Origin store, though if that's the case, they have since been removed. They also note rumors that the game will be formally unveiled in the next issue of the European magazine Gamereactor. Here's the description they offer, which mentions "a unique action shooter" and a "Visceral FPS Experience":

Syndicate is the re-imagination of a cult classic franchise from 1993 - a unique action shooter set in a not too distant future, where Business is War.

2069 – No longer governed by politicians, the developed world is divided up into regions controlled by megacorporations known as Syndicates. These Syndicates have revolutionized how the consumer interacts with the digital world. No longer does the consumer require a device to access the worldˇ¦s data and control their technology, they can do this at the blink of an eye via neural chip implant. Civilians flocked to be ˇ§chipˇ¦dˇ¨ and enjoy all that their selected Syndicate has to offer; housing, medical, banking, insurance, education, entertainment and jobs. One complete package. One complete lifestyle. In return, the Syndicates gained unprecedented insights, and control, over the individual and their behaviour. With little governmental oversight, business has become war. The Syndicates will stop at nothing for ultimate market dominance. At the front line of this war are the Agents, the Syndicateˇ¦s bio-engineered and chip-augmented enforcers. They can breach anything in the wired world including their enemies, their weapons and the environment that surrounds them, making them the most efficient and deadly technological weapons in the world.

Take on the role of Miles Kilo, Eurocorpˇ¦s latest prototype agent, and embark on a brutal action adventure of corruption and revenge.

• Chip Enhanced Gameplay: Slow down time, see through walls, and breach your enemy and everything digital in the world with Dart vision – A neural DART6 chip implant that allows you to interface directly with the Dataverse.

• 4-Player Online Co-op: Assemble your Syndicate for global domination. A 4-player, online co-op experience like no other, with chip enhanced gameplay and 9 missions re-imagined from the original Syndicate.

• Visceral FPS Experience: Utilize an upgradable arsenal of futuristic weapons, armor and gear to annihilate your enemies and harvest their chip technology for personal advancement and sinister corporate greed.

• Sci-Fi Fiction: Immerse yourself in the world of Syndicate 2069, with a world-class sci-fi story experience, written by bestselling author Richard Morgan.

No, I'm making NO assumptions, other than I think it's idiotic that people are crying over a name.

Yeah you did, you said it'll probably be fun with literally nothing at all to base it on (just like everyone else). You used that text below. Here I'll quote it:

It'll probably be a lot of fun, though not a strict Syndicate game.

You make assumptions like everyone else, you are no better.

Really?
The only examples to come up so far are Wolfenstein, Fallout and Shadowrun.

I'm not going to spend an hour on google making a list for you to nitpick, obviously it's the case as people are quite jaded about it at this point for a reason. I don't fault the industry for hitting as often as missing but I don't care for their approach to some of these franchises.

At least as often as not when the industry dredges up old IP they do badly with it so there's merit to peoples concerns.

You CAN'T make a new Syndicate in FPS mode.

Obviously you can, as someone is.
But most of the tactics you're babbling about will be out the window. This will have the tactics lightly, hopefully brain manipulation, and otherwise exist in the world and atmosphere of the game.

It'll probably be a lot of fun, though not a strict Syndicate game.
Given that Syndicate Wars wasn't terribly brilliant, I don't see this as a huge deal. We'll get a fun game. Who cares if it has a name you're crying over?

T:A looks even worse than T:V. At least T:V retained the freeform loadout system and weapon carry limits of the previous games. T:A has predefined loadouts, each with a two-weapon limit. And they added unlockables. And health regen. And nerfed the speed down to T2 Base levels. And added a bunch of hitscan weapons. I'd rather Tribes stay dead than see it raped like T:A appears to be doing.
Well, frankly I disagree but then I was a great fan of T2.

Damn. Another Shadowrun, etc... idiocy.

You CAN'T make a new Syndicate in FPS mode. Syndicate is about managing a team that starts with 4 people and might go all the way to a dozen if you take over some brains.
It's all about team tactics, positioning and timing.
Good luck FPSing that sucker.

Here's what the new FPS is gonna look like:
- You get all the guns of Syndicate
- You get the "powers" of Syndicate, like mind control
- You get money to upgrade after each mission
- It's in shades of green and yellow

But everything you do is hyper localized to within a dozen meters of yourself. For example, you'd take over a mind and the guy would go on a rampage around you, nothing complex. Go flip a switch here, activate a turret there, all to cross to the next section. Once you've crossed, you can forget all about the previous section.

Life today is about what you see in this room and the next.

I'm so torn now.

On one hand it could work. I liked/love Fallout: New Vegas, but I thought they throughly botched Fallout 3. So I think that redoing Isometric into an FPS if done right, could work. Note the word IF.

On the other hand they can bork it right out of the gate. Like when they redid Shadowrun into that cluster-F' of an FPS with powers game, WTF thought that idea was a brillant stroke of ingenuity... God help him, he needs it.

So I hope it works, I really do. I hate how they wreck our timeless classics, but there's an off chance it will work and be decent. Based on personal tastes of course.

This could work. As long as they keep the strategic aspect of the original game, and translate the tactical into a FPS. Heh now that Ive said it, thats just pure fantasy. I guess Im prepared for the worst here.

Well a fps Planescape can easily appeal to the emo crowd. Plenty of self mutilation, cutting, and self-inflicted vivisection's.

The agents in syndicate had regenerating health, so that translates well to modern FPS's I suppose.

This game could be epic(ya I know) if they made it in the style of Dungeon Keeper so you can control the economy/tech/tactics in an isometric view, and then jump into your Agent in FPS style to complete your dirty deed.

To make it even better they can have online co-op so 3-4 of your friends can be your agents while you coordinate the chaos.

Also, someone in this thread called X-COM an RTS.
It wasn't an RTS. But if remade today it would be, as tactics games are dead. Indies can make them, but indies can't afford established IPs, they create their own.

Which is fine, really, let an indie create an awesome world rather than use someone else's. Not sure why people would want that.
And let major studios create something they know they can do well that's inspired by but nothing like the original rather than try to emulate it in crappy ways and make some shoddy RTS like half the X-COM clones have been.

And just look at JA to see how smaller devs totally fail at established IPs.

You didn't play Fallout so you didn't give a shit if they removed the core Fallout gameplay, and you were happy with a watered down action game with RPG-Lite aspects. They could have called Fallout3 whatever they wanted, and you still would have liked it. .

Uh... if what you took from my post was "Beamer never played Fallout" you're an idiot.
Then again, you're an idiot.

Semantics. The reality is that Syndicate was a dead brand that has been revived, just like Fallout 3. Nothing was being done with them. Now you could argue that they're better left dead than remade like this but Fallout 3 was very well received and it remains to be seen what happens with the new Syndicate.

If the latest entry in a series is completely different than and/or inferior to the previous entries, then the revival of the series doesn't really mean anything at all. It's like if they made a new Dungeon Keeper game, only this time it's a military shooter. Should fans of the original games be happy about that? It remains to be seen whether or not the new Syndicate will be a worthy entry to the series but again, just because a new game has an old franchise slapped onto it doesn't mean fans should automatically rejoice.

Afterall, Tribes: Vengeance was crap but the poor reception and criticism lead on to Tribes: Ascend, which looks to be much better.

What the FUCK?!?!?

First X-Com, and now this? Why is the industry so interested in shitting on the legacy of awesome strategy games to release more FPS crap.

*RAGE*

Seriously.. Yeah okay so CoD sells a lot of units, that does NOT mean you have to make every fucking game a shooter.

How long before all games promise a Visceral FPS Experience?

There's a pretty big difference between the games you listed and games like Fallout 3, XCOM and Syndicate. Renegade was never considered a sequel or reboot of the C&C series. It was a spin-off released while more traditional sequels were still being made.

And even if it is a terrible game it may be good for the brand. Afterall, Tribes: Vengeance was crap but the poor reception and criticism lead on to Tribes: Ascend, which looks to be much better. We can always hope that this game - whether good or bad - will bring us one step closer to a true sequel. Afterall, if this game doesn't sell then the IP could be shelved for another 10yrs, at which point you'll never see it revived again. Very few 30yr old titles get revisited.

Regarding the tangential X-Com bitching, the catch there is that all of those games have been shit since Terror from the Deep. Even TftD wasn't super awesome so the original is really the only purely excellent game in the whole series! Enforcer and Interceptor were already shooters and not so great. Maybe the new game will at least be better than those. Anyway, there have been a ton of X-Com tact-strat clones so go get your fix there if the DOS games aren't doing it for you anymore.

The hell? Apocalypse was awesome, and very innovative for its time. Seeing a popper turn the corner and hoping that your squaddie can shoot it with opportunity fire before fucks up half of your squad was every bit as intense as catching a glimpse of a chrysalid in the dark. And while Interceptor was a flight sim, it retained the setting, aliens, research and basebuilding aspects of traditional X-COM gameplay.

Enforcer, on the other hand, was an abomination.

Yeah, except they're all made by small shitty european developers, aren't turn based, and suck.

As another of those people that have played and enjoyed the original Syndicate, I honestly don't know how I feel about this.

Really, I don't think I need another FPS right now...but if it is done right, and keeps the same format of a 4 man squad with research and upgrades...it could be decent.

I'll wait for more info...
