Origin Boasts 4M Client Installs; Promises Third-Party Content "Very Soon"

There are quotes on Gamasutra from Electronic Arts CFO Eric Brown, after he spoke today at a UBS conference in London. Speaking about their Origin service, he says to expect games from other publishers in the near future: "Initially, Origin is set up to deliver EA games, but very soon, we'll be delivering third-party content to Origin." He also spoke of how Origin is doing. "We're fairly excited about Origin," he said. "We have about 4 million installs of the client, we expect that number to climb substantially as we enter this ... holiday season." The article also notes that EA's PC games now install Origin by default, even if the game is purchased at retail.

What games are currently released that require Origin on PC?

The 4M number can't be all BF3 preorders because there aren't that many across all platforms let alone PC and a preorder doesn't have to mean they installed the client anyway.

So we're left with other games that require Origin (I admit I have no idea what these are) and games that optionally use Origin that prompted the user to willingly install Origin. You don't think 4M installs in 3 months for a service that most people don't want is unusually high?

I'm going to guess that a lot of that is TOR traffic. If you ordered through EA, you needed an origin account. And even if you didn't, everyone that preordered got an early access code, and I think you needed an origin account to register that.

Ah that would explain it, I had totally forgotten about TOR.

Yea, cause prices on Steam are out of control! ugh.

Origin is not good. Name 1 reason - cause price is not one of them. Look at THEIR prices....

Bats, monopolies are not good. Never. Steam needs strong competetion, just to keep Steam keen and lean. If a competitor gives lower prices, Steam will be under pressure. If a competitor uses no or less drm, Steam will be under pressure. That really is a good thing. Of course, all this can only work with games available at Steam, Origin, and other competitors. Exclusives won't help competition.

Well, lets see:
D2D
Green Men Gaming
Amazon
GOG
GamersGate
GameTap
GameStop
Impulse
Xbox.com

I hope you realize that Steam doesn't set the prices the developers/publishers do. The companies placing the games on Steam are the ones you need to have an axe to grind.

Valve has done what they said they would do with prices for their own games. Not one Valve game has stayed full price longer than it had to and frequently run deep sales.

Did you need to launch EADM/Store to play games you bought through it?

I hope a lot of sheeple learn to love Origin, so that I as a Steam customer can capitalize on them!

Now, this is the right attitude.

Big deal. They can only claim these numbers because they force Old Republic MMO pre order people to install it.

SO this is a bullshit press release

OMG, a service that's been out for what, 1-2 months hasn't caught up to Steam, which has been out for 8 years! Stop the presses!

A service that is backed by the worlds largest publisher. Things take time to build, time that EA obviously didn't bother with before launching it. Comparing with Steam is unavoidable but feels wrong because Valve had nothing to replicate unlike EA.

because whether they "get over it" or not determines whether it is shit or not?

By all means, explain why it's "shit".

My point about "getting over it" was with regards to the "I can't believe I have to install this client just to play the game". Steam did just that, and people complained then too. But nowadays, you're more likely to see complaints (as we've seen repeatedly) when a game isn't available on Steam than when Steam is required.

Seeing as how if I recall, they just "converted" every EA.com account to an Origin account (including the majority of them that never had purchases) made, I will also call bullshit on the accuracy of this.

They aren't claiming to have 4 million accounts, they are claiming 4 million installs of the client. Converting EA.com accounts has absolutely no bearing on that whatsoever - unless all the EA.com people decided to dl the client.

And yeah, like others said, even if the number is true, they've just barely eclipsed the number of CONCURRENT users Steam has on during peak times. It's not that impressive in the end.

OMG, a service that's been out for what, 1-2 months hasn't caught up to Steam, which has been out for 8 years! Stop the presses!
