Honestly, that's it... this is lame.
It's still going on, with 11-Sept being the last update of someone arguing/proving/contradicting.
I remember when the post went up I was expecting to read more about how much the readers liked the game, someone saying they bought two copies, asking about hard missions, etc.
Instead, it's like an English Teacher, Mathematics Teacher, and Computer Science Teacher arguing over the semantics/syntax of the numbering prefixes.
Principal: Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. |

It would be strange to mix Roman and Arabic numerals. Something like 2M would make no sense, you'd need to use MM. In fact I've never seen that those two are being used simultaneously as it does not make any sense. M for Mega, however, is a prefix and just stands for 10^6 which is perfectly fine.

Akuinnen wrote on Sep 9, 2011, 18:59: I think Krovven saying the US doesn't use the metric system is a stretch. There are plenty of fields that primarily use the metric system. Of course some do, we still use Imperial in Canada for some things. Just like those below, stating Roman Numerals aren't used would be incorrect as well. But officially, the US is still on imperial. Hell most of the print industry uses Imperial standards for paper, because of the US. 8.5x11 inches is a standard Letter sheet of paper in the US and Canada, in Europe it's A4 210 x 297 mm. But we don't use the metric format in Canada, we use the imperial format.
I'll say this yet again, using the metric measurement system applied to money is just plain stupid. And those that want to claim that's how it's done (K, M, B) because of the metric system, their argument falls apart when it comes to B for Billion, as the metric system would be G for Giga.
K, M & B are used because they are socially accepted, not because they are official or proper abbreviations.
'I dont care what the print industry does', is pretty fucking ignorant and immature. Would you care to use "does not, does too" as your argument next time? Who do you think prints all those fancy law books, advertising and financial documents for your industries? And why the fuck should I care about you and your input on how things are done in your industry when you are going to talk like a child instead of having a discussion?

I find this discussion hilarious. And for all the right reasons too - the title started out with a correct concept, yet some find it bothersome to actually understand it or at least want to argue about things not worth arguing about.
Yes M roman is not correct if you want to say 2 million, it's commonly used 2k if you wanted to say 2000 (whereas correct is 2m or rather MM as M=1000) If you want to use roman for million use M with a bar over it as described below. If you already accept K(kilo) for a thousand in value/amount then you may as well accept M for a million.
Either way, happy playing and stay sane. |
