Deus Ex: Human Revolution Delayed in Japan

Square Enix has announced a delay to the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution in Japan just a couple of days before its planned release on Thursday, reports Adrian Sang, saying the Japanese release of the action/RPG sequel is delayed to "October" (Thursday is in October, but obviously it will be later than that). They explain that Square Enix discovered an area in the game that "shows expressions forbidden by the Japanese games ratings board," apparently visual in nature, and confined to one area of the game. What the offending visuals consist of is not specified. Thanks MCV.

I'd imagine it's some Japanese symbols that while visually interesting prolly say something like "kill emperor".

That's what I thought this was about before everyone got all rape crazed.

No, those are legal in Japanese games, too, I think.

This is just both funny and wrong on so many levels.

Nah that lasted about all of a year and change, according to people I spoke to. And I didn't see any when I was in tokyo, akiba, nagasaki, sapporo or nagano when I was there about 5 months ago. Though I could still buy beer from vending machines on the street which was nice.

Based upon all my research done on Asian porno videos, they usually censor out the hoo-hoo dilly and cha-cha so I bet it's the secret room with the dildos.

Wow, I must have totally missed that room.

Different contexts, though. I'm sure videogames fall under much more scrutiny than art exhibits.
Perhaps, but didn't "Ghost in the Shell" start with a scene involving the creation of The Major's body?

Did it start out skeletal, then get muscle, then float up to the top to get the skin layer?

Then again, it's been a while. That whole "muscle" scene could've been very brief... I don't recall much more than the "weird, they're building a body" bit.

I kind of wonder where this games ratings board was when Rapelay was released.
Half simplistic and mostly not true. Most of that stuff does or didn't fall under the realm of ratings boards. Besides "rapelay" is still tame compared to what you could buy then. And still wouldn't be news if someone didn't get their panties in a knot over it(mostly the name). The imposition of post WWII american culture in japan kinda messed with a lot of stuff. Most stuff that's imported for the sale to the general public falls under ratings. The rest of the stuff you listed is considered 'outside the norm' in society there anyway, and falls outside the realm of ratings.

Indeed. It's kind of like NR (Not Rated) films and games in the US. Generally they are art films or underground films that are understood to be vile, repugnant, or offensive, but do not get enough exposure to warrant an official rating by the ESRB or MPAA.

Of course those things gain notoriety in foreign nations because of the, "OMG look at what those crazy foreigners are doing!" shock value. But anyone that has traveled the world knows, people are people are people, no matter where you go.

I guess it's likely that rapelay was never submitted to the ratings board for a rating, and was sold in a similar fashion as we have AO material.

Still, for them to find some kind of huge problem with DE:HR which requires it to be delayed for over a month is kind of insane.
