Ships Ahoy - Dead Island; Patch Coming; Steam has an Xbox Build?

The Windows edition of Dead Island is now available in North America, offering Techland's zombie-themed action/RPG. The game is available in stores and also via digital distribution on GamersGate, Impulse, and Steam. Apparently a day-on patch is on the way, Destructoid has word on that along with a lengthy list of changes the patch will include. There's also a thread on the Steam Users' Forums stating the version available on Steam is actually an Xbox 360 build of the game based on header information calling this an "Xbox Live Submission Project Version." Eurogamer has word from Techland that they are looking into this: "Techland is currently investigating this information and we'll do everything we can to make sure everyone can enjoy playing their copy of Dead Island," a spokesperson told them. "Deep Silver is a part of every release process and any further updates will come from the game's publisher."

Played for about 3 hours last night. The game is a lot of fun, albeit, kind of shallow.

Lots of little problems, strange design decisions, etc. Mouse movement is excellent. Character movement is good, better than Deus Ex. Engine looks a bit dated, but still looks good. Story? Who cares. Zombies on island, must kill to survive. Enough for me.

On iPhone, sorry for brief words.

Wow I was expecting the game to be a little bit buggy but not this. Can't believe they fucked up this much. They clearly need to sack their QA department and start over.

I also think that after Deus Ex showed how to do a proper PC port, PC gamers need to stop supporting this kind of half-assed horseshit...
I don't want to sidetrack this conversation, but I seriously don't get how DX:HR was a great port. I have recently played Witcher 2, Red Faction Armageddon, and a few others all without incident (I don't recall a single crash in Witcher 2), but DX:HR is the buggiest piece of junk I've ever seen. I'm about halfway through and I'm seriously considering dropping it because I just can't enjoy myself when it crashes so much. If I get though 30 minutes without a crash, it's something to celebrate. I WANT to enjoy this game, but crash! Crash! CRASH! ugggg, maybe I'll go watch some TV...

I know it's frustrating when you are the only one that crashes, but so far there's not many people for whom it is crashing, actually. In 70 hours of playing it, I've crashed ONCE.

Other than that, all the PC options are there, it's got a PC UI, a quick bar, FOV settings, etc etc etc.

How is this not a great port? Again, it sucks that you are crashing, but that doesn't change that it's a great port.

When I start the game up I get a couple of messages like, "DLC not found" "DLC is corrupt" etc.

Bought this on a total spur of the moment when CS clanmates asked to go in on a 4 pack. Basically the line (I think I heard it around here) about "tons of technical issues but still fun in spite of them" convinced me.

Well If Deus Ex went to $35 a week after release on Amazon, maybe Dead Island will get a good sale soon. I'll pick it up for <$40.

It's $39.99 on Amazon if you buy the download version right now, actually.

This game is really broken. That dumb patch broke existing saves. Every time I restart after quitting it puts me back at the first level and thats assuming it doesnt crash or any of the other annoying problems I've seen.

Damn that sucks. It REALLY sucks when it's a game you really wanted and have been waiting for. I remember the two weeks that I was unable to play Half-Life 2 (downloaded it from Steam on launch day) because of the audio stuttering bug - it was 2 of the longest weeks of my gaming life.

As hard as it is sometimes, I always try to wait at least a week or two for issues like this to be worked out before I play. I may pre-order if the deal is good enough, but I'll still sit on it for at least a week before firing it up. Saves me a lot of frustration.

I would definitely look at your setup, as the game is rock solid here - great performance, clearly optimised for PC (DX11 features, etc), no obvious gameplay bugs. The patch notes mention an issue with older drivers, so could that be part of your problem? Your experience does not seem to be representative, as everyone I know that has it has said it runs fine. Don't forget, just because other games don't crash doesn't mean it's not an issue with your system. Is your processor or graphics card overclocked?

I had a LOT of fun with this game last night, played about 5 hours without knowing anything was wrong. Yeah the controls are wonky, especially in the menus, and I encountered a few crashes, as well as a very strange glitch that had one enemy cause me to level up each time he hit me... Hopefully those things will be fixed, but even if they weren't I wouldn't really mind.

The only thing stopping me from playing right now is the possibility of another save game wipe when the final version is released. Interestingly, I still had my level 16 character and his inventory, but his game statistics (time played, monsters killed, etc.) and quest progress were erased. So basically it broke my game, but I think I'd be able to join other players without a problem.

I fixed that by turning on triple buffering and setting the screen ratio to manual (in my case 16:9) instead of auto.

Did you try that? For some weird reason that fixed the wonky "mouse smoothed" feel of the controls.

Thx for the heads up on this guys. Guess a clean slate restart is best anyway. I was only about 1h into the game... oh well.

It may be an utterly botched release, but its been running rock solid here and IMHO the game is pretty fun so far.

I'm pretty sure the same thing happened with Shogun 2 on Steam. They released the wrong version but fixed it the next day.

I personally had zero bugs or issues with DX:HR. On the topic of Dead Island, my only bug is a stuttering issue that seems to crop up after about 20 minutes of play. The game runs wonderfully on max settings but then I get a 10 second freeze (and the harddrive goes nuts) followed by about 10fps. It's my only big bug. Besides that the controls are rather squirly and movement is a little awkward.

But in terms of pure gameplay, it's a lot of fun. Getting a bunch of zombies on your ass and having to beat your way through them is really fun and heart pumping because you can be overwhelmed 'really' easy. Now if only they'd patch it to fix the stuttering issues and I'd consider the game worth the $35 I payed for it.

While I had several lock ups with the beta, I didn't have a single problem with the shipping version locking up/crashing. What does your event log say?

And yes, I know its an old mantra, but did you try updating drivers? This often fixes many types of issues.

Yeah, I would look into your setup because I played the entire game without a single error or crash, as did a number of friends who also bought it. It very well could be a problem that DE:HR is triggering but from a general perspective, it's extremely stable and polished.

Also, I don't know if that's your real e-mail address you put in the subject line of your post but I'd remove it if you don't want to get spammed to Hell and gone.

Looks like a 77 meg patch is out, and while my save game loads, the scripting is broken.

Time to restart...
