Black Rock Studio Closed

Nick Baynes, the former director of Black Rock Studio, tweets that the Disney-owned studio is now officially closed, saying: "@blackrockster officially closes it's doors today. Thoughts go out to all facing their last day. A bright future awaits all though I'm sure!" The developer of racing games such as Split/Second and Pure suffered layoffs back in May, and in July Disney announced plans to close the studio. In between some of the former Black Rock staff formed a new Brighton, England-based "micro-developer" called ShortRound Games, which has not yet revealed its first project. Thanks Gamasutra, where they note other Black Rock vets have been part of two other startups since the layoffs. BOSS ALIEN and Roundcube Entertainment. There's a Black Rock Studio obituary on Develop.

So wonderful to work in the industry. Only an insane dev won't go indie at this point.

If an indie had the ROI that Black Rock had he wouldn't be out of his job, he'd be out of his home, too.

Split/Second may have been a great game, but it sold like liver flavored twinkies. Awful release timing.

Split Second was fun. Shame it didn't save them from Disney.

So wonderful to work in the industry. Brutal work environment topped with some of the highest percentage of lay offs in any industry.

Only an insane dev won't go indie at this point.
