The Secret World Beta Signups (For Real)

Funcom announces that whatever conspiracy undermined beta signups for The Secret World on Friday has unraveled, and they are now accepting applications to test the upcoming MMORPG. This also kicks off the first phase of "The Secret War," described as an "interactive online experience." Here's a bit:

Durham, USA – August 29th, 2011 – Funcom today opened the official beta registration for ‘The Secret World’, the highly anticipated upcoming massively multiplayer online game set in our own, modern-day world. Gamers can now register to be evaluated for participation in the upcoming phases of beta that will be running up to the launch of the game in April 2012. During the next months Funcom will be increasing the number of beta participants gradually.

The launch of the beta registration also signals the start of the first phase ‘The Secret War’, an interactive online experience that engages community members in the conflict between the Templars, the Illuminati, and the Dragon – the three factions in ‘The Secret World’ – even before the game is released.

Requires Facebook connect, at least for this phase of what they're doing.

In case anyone else looks into signing up, just to warn you ahead of time.
http://www.thesecretworld.com/ says beta registration delayed. Thanks for the warning. Frak Facebook!

No, they stated it very clearly in several places. The gist is to have mini games that you try and get your friends to help you with. So not only do they want complete and open access to your FB account. They want all your personal information as well. And they want to be able to spam your wall with messages and email you on top of that. Then the clincher...they want you to annoy and bother your friends in hopes they'll become paying customers too. Even if all this was fully F2P - which I doubt it would be I'd never do that. Quite honestly, they can kiss my ass.

Now they're claiming the game is heavily dependent on social networking and they want to annoy your friends with spam too? Wow, not only has this game failed epically already I'm supposing this is pretty much the end of Funcom at this point.

Well, to be fair they're just saying that this phase of the beta they want people connected with Facebook to test that portion of their game. I don't think that's any indication that it's required later, as I'm sure it's not.

Huh, I'm against Facebook because I'm old and un-cool. But wait 3 other posts that are also against Facebook?

Why not? Don't you have a garbage email account? Just create a garbage FB account, no big whoop.

Allow me to retract that statement. Even with a fake account that's just inexcusably invasive. Why not ask if you can have access to my health records while you're at it?

I WAS going to apply for beta. I am not creating a lame Facebook account just to play in a beta. If they ever drop this ridiculous requirement for beta, I will then try. I said the same on their forums.

Same. Looks interesting enough, but now way in hell am I going to create a facebook account for it.
