New AMD/ATI Reference Drivers

AMD now offers new version 11.8 Catalyst reference drivers for AMD/ATI graphics cards. The highlight of the new release is the addition of overclocking for AMD Black edition CPUs to AMD Overdrive. The new drivers are available for Windows 7 & Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows XP 32-bit, Windows 7 & Windows Vista 64-bit, and Windows XP 64-bit. There is also a AMD Catalyst Hotfix for “No compatible hardware found” error on AGP graphics cards. Here are the performance highlights:

  • Improves performance up to 10% in Crysis 2 DirectX 11 version for both non-Anti-Aliasing, and application enabled Anti-Aliasing cases on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 and AMD Radeon™ HD 5000 Series
  • Improves performance up to 8% in Fear 3 DirectX 11 version with application enabled Anti-Aliasing on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 and AMD Radeon™ HD 5000 Series
  • Improves performance up to 30% when AMD’s Morphological Anti-Aliasing (MLAA) is enabled through the Catalyst™ Control Center on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 and AMD Radeon™ HD 5000 Series
  • Improves performance up to 20% in Call of Duty Black Operations for single GPU and Multi-GPU configurations on the AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 and AMD Radeon™ HD 5000 Series

My nvidia driver is dated 1/2011

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm apparently using Catalyst 8.8 from November.

I think I always download these but just forget to run them.
Do newer games work with that old driver? I used to run v9.7, but had problems with newer games with my old, updated XP Pro. SP3 and 4870 (512 MB) video card.

Newish games I've played with it have been Witcher 2, Duke Demo, Brink.

Didn't notice any issues and didn't find myself wanting more frames even with settings maxed.

This is on a 5870.
Interesting, I have had a few new demos and betas that didn't show graphics correctly.

Last couple of drivers I've had corruption in the PowerDVD menus of Blurays? Anyone else seen that? My google-fu is too weak to wade through all the other powerdvd & ati shit.

I couldn't get these to install on my 6950 that is flashed to a 6970 (I did do an uninstall first). At first I got a blue screen, then on subsequent atttempts I got "No compatible hardware found. Despite that linked hotfix not being for my card, I tried it and it worked! This on Windows 7 64-bit.

the auto fan control on these still sucks, I go from 30% fan on idle desktop to 35% fan under heavy gaming. Still have to manually crank up the fans before gaming

Wonder if there is some sort of spammer hit list out there or something.

Been running these (albeit, the preview 11.8 drivers released with the 11.7's) for over a month, without any problems: installing, or running.

While AMD certainly can improve their driver support (I'm looking at you Crossfire), I've yet to have/see any issues like the constant outpouring of "I installed these drivers and they killed my wife/child/dog, then made me watch while they barbequed/ate the battered corpses," that comes up in every single AMD driver thread here on Blues.

I've used multiple mismatched Crossfire setups in my day, with beta drivers, and no lack of overclocking/tweaking - If this stuff is as common is it would seem, shouldn't I have been gruesomely killed in some sort of explosive driver snafu by now?

5-6+ years ago, sure, the drivers were a mess - now? Either fanboi lulz, or PEBKAC.

I HAVE had a "blue screen" (actually, black screen then reboot but the Windows error log called it a "blue screen"..) on Windows 7 64-bit when running the AMD Catalyst Driver Update. I was having problems with a few - and only a specific few - games at the same time. What fixed it? I replaced the power supply which in hindsight was getting wonky. No issues since.

By the way: a first for me! First time I've seen a spam post on Blues..

The install package does that itself these days anyway.

Yeah...that uninstall before install thing died a while ago...for nVidia for sure. I would think ATI is similar.

I've historically been a big defender of ATI drivers, because I never had trouble. nvidia's drivers were always way worse. Until a couple of months ago, when AMDTI released a set that bluescreened my computer on install, crashed it on its next boot, and on the next boot displayed everything with a neon green tinge.

I figured out the green, eventually: Apparently they broke EDID support at the beginning of the year and still haven't fixed it. If you just disabled it, it gets rid of the green.

I've installed dozens of ATI drivers over the years, and I never had a problem until now. You are running the same 11.8 preview drivers I was, which seemed bug free, so you might want to skip these official 11.8's and avoid any headaches.

What's the problem? Just run the installer and it will upgrade your drivers, no reboot needed at all, works perfectly ...
You do know that you're supposed to uninstall the previous drivers first, don't you? While installing over previous drivers works, it will sometimes lead to problems (e.g. when the current drivers contain a file that is older than the one in the previous release).

In any case, the installer kept crashing... I ended up using the installer from the preview drivers... problem solved.
