the disappearing middle-class of gaming hits the nail on the head, and the pricing of games isn't helping that at all...if it's not the root cause of it.

At this point it's pretty much the disappearing everything-not-CoD issue. Look at console sales - Black Ops was a decent game at best (it was certainly a lesser game than MW2) and it's sold 23 million copies.

The previous 2 Halos, one an expansion and one a prequel, have sold far less than the 3 Halos before. I'd wager Gears of War 3 may take a drop, too.

Console gamers, who make up the bulk of hardcore gamers (though the pendulum is clearly swinging back) pretty much just play Call of Duty. It has a huge online community, so playing it makes sense if you want to do online gaming, but it's become very difficult for anything else to crack 2 million, whereas before Modern Warfare you had games doing it regularly.

Modern Warfare, and its successors, has pretty much become the CounterStrike of consoles - it's all anyone wants to play online and it has enough depth to keep fresh (people can argue this all they want, but the successful tactics of MW and MW2 changed regularly. Someone would innovate, good players would follow for, lesser players would adapt, the innovation was mooted, and a new innovation came up. Something that would get you tons of kills one week would get you slaughtered then next.) This will be a boon to PC gaming, but it's going to take some time.

It is a niche device, but it looks like a great niche gaming device.

If it's a niche device it's a failure.

What agent 47 says +1

The 3ds was an over-priced gimmick. Impressive only in how quickly it failed in the global marketplace.

The vita appears to be a solid gaming machine with all the buttons and sticks you need (unlike a phone). It is a niche device, but it looks like a great niche gaming device.

game pricing is a whole other topic. Yes console games price at 59 USA dollars these days, BUT for some time now, new major release games are quickly dropping to 40 bucks after 2-3 weeks from release date. The global recession is directing game prices.

Most iOS games are probably worth only $1...but most 3DS and Vita games will not be worth $40.

Worth is a hard thing to judge, since some games will certainly sell for $40. It's likely to be the same issue as $49 games shifting to $59 this last generation; the quote from Epic today that talks about the disappearing middle-class of gaming hits the nail on the head, and the pricing of games isn't helping that at all...if it's not the root cause of it.

Handheld games had been $30ish until recently, a price where most can afford to gamble on some of the games you pick up. The higher the price goes, the less likely that people are going to make that gamble on non-AAA games or games with middling review scores.

It's probably too late for the 3DS to go this route, but if the Vita opens up to having an indie-dev relationship, like what's being seen on XBL or Steam or even the Apple store right now, in addition to their core full-priced games, you could easily see something that does as well as any of the phones out there.

Playing games on phones sucks. Vita is not a phone, therefore it has a chance to not suck. Comparing 3DS to Vita is stupid, because 3DS is based on a gimmick and not on gameplay. Ooooh, 3d cardboard cutout headache inducing nonsense, let me pay $250 for the right to play a Mario and Zelda remake on that please!

The PSV and 3DS are both going down in flames unless they start offering less expensive software. You can charge $100 for either one of them and if you're still going to ask $40 to play a game you're out of your mind. The problem is not that people expect everything to cost $1, the problem is that people have so many more options now that the real value of each game, 3DS / Vita / iOS is easy to judge. Most iOS games are probably worth only $1...but most 3DS and Vita games will not be worth $40.

Drop the prices. And that alone will probably not be enough. Not having an "app store" that anyone can design and publish on is a big negative. They may not be filled with outstanding software titles but when a million apps are on there the top 100 are pretty damn awesome.

And the PS3 just dropped to $249...if they ship the PSV at the same price I think they're going to hurt themselves as well. They would be wise to drop it to $199 at least. You don't want ppl looking at what they get for $250 in the ps3 and $250 in the Vita.
