Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Announced

Noting the first beta of the Counter-Strike modification for Half-Life was released almost exactly 12 years ago (it was actually June of '99, not August), Valve officially announces Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO), a new multiplatform installment in the Counter-Strike series of tactical shooters planned for release early next year on Windows and OS X (via Steam), PlayStation Network, and Xbox LIVE Arcade. The game is in development at Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment, and Valve plans to show it at this year's PAX Prime and London Games Festival Eurogamer Expo 2011 (Valve sent a subsequent correction about the second show). Here's the announcement, which shows this news may have been rushed due to the premature revelation of the project, since it is dated tomorrow:

VALVE ANNOUNCES COUNTER-STRIKE: GLOBAL OFFENSIVE (CS: GO)

Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012

August 13, 2011 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

I don't think playing with bots is a good way to improve your skills but really, who cares if people want to play that way? It doesn't affect those of us who play with other people.

So they only interviewed the current crop of neophytes. The players that actually loved the beta(betas 3 through 5.2 played the best of any version) are still getting put by the wayside, as the complaining about the strength of SMGs was mentioned while the tweaked accuracy of the ARs was complained about. Clan play early on was a mixture of MP5, P90(added in beta 4 or 5), and some M4/AK. Beta 6 forward to now it's been mostly AWP/AK or bust, and relatively boring.

Eh skip that stuff... Play GunGame and be forced to be good with every gun.

Hey guess what, slick; CS didn't have bots. Shocking, I know, that the most successful shooter out there didn't come with bots. There are singleplayer games and there are multiplayer games. CS is and forever will be the latter.

"Q: How do I add bots?
A: Bots are built into Counter-Strike: Source. Within your control panel under "Default Config Files" you'll have a Bot.cfg file. You'll need to modify the file to allow bots on your server and you're done after restarting your server."

And then theres how to add bots to a CS 1.6 server:

Good thing they don't exist, eh "Slick"?

It didn't always have bots... but got them later first through 3rd party mods and then much later through an official patch.

You guys are both dumb. HUFF PUFF

Oh, I get it. When CoD is the most successful SP shooter of all time it's crap liked by sheep that should be improved, but when CS is the most successful shooter it's amazing and well-deserved and shouldn't be changed.

Episode 3 wouldn't exactly be new. It would be an expansion pack to HL2, just like Episodes 1 and 2 were.

An expansion still means new content and a new story that hasn't been done before.

I wouldn't exactly call TF2, Portal or L4D quick cash-ins either. In fact, those games were all much more innovative and new than any of the HL2 expansions.

Not in my opinion. TF2 is TF only with a new graphic style. The same goes for Portal 1 (Narbacular Drop), Portal 2 (Tag: The Power of Paint) and L4D (Killing Floor).

Actually it is because I'd rather a developer for a competitive online game not waste time and resources catering to a bunch of douchebags like you all. If you're too lazy to find good servers (or run your own), then go play a game that isn't designed for the explicit purpose of play against other people.

Yep those bots are present for no reason at all, not for new players to learn the basics and practice or anything. They should all just kill themselves not being an insufferable shut in who was instantly good at the game like you.

Wow, nevermind. You really are one of the whiniest, most self-entitled douchebags I've met. Thought it was just a text-translation thing, but no, it's all you.

#1) You are not the only gamer out there. Your opinion overrides NO ONE else's.
#2) The game is based on source. The Bot AI is already coded and part of the engine. All they need to do is drop it in as an alternate option. Time and resources are a non-issue.
#3) Demanding that developers cater to you and you only, and raging against the fact that other people might enjoy something that you don't is probably the limit of how childish and self-centered a person can possibly be. Congratulations.

No you are definitely a douchebag if you think playing with bots holds a candle to real people. The last game that had passable AI was Unreal Tournament. Even the worst sentient enemy is better than the best bot.

No one suggested bots play the game as well as people. That's your own foolish addition to this conversation.

The point is, there are too many douchebags playing shooters these days and further that said douchebags detract from the enjoyment gotten from actually playing the game sufficiently that there are times we'd rather play against bots than listen to idiots rant.

Whether someone prefers to simply play offline rather than waste their time censoring said idiots really isn't any of your business.
