Op Ed

Ars Technica - What EA will lose if Battlefield 3 remains off Steam.
This entire debate can be boiled down to the simple fact that people already use Steam, they like Steam, and they resent being forced to set up an account with another service to play a game. This is especially true when it's a brand-new, untested storefront that's being driven by a company that has given PC gamers every reason to be skeptical. It's unclear if Battlefield 3 will be enough of a draw to make customers forget that fact.

For many gamers, Steam is PC gaming and, while threats of a boycott often seem hollow, in this case it will be as if the game simply doesn't exist for many Steam users.

I know it uses Origin and I have no issue with that, I just want to avoid the website part of it if possible.

Well all signs point to not being able to. Seeing as you have no problem running another client then you should be fine running a web browser too I would think.

I don't think timing really matters. I mean certainly they are so entrenched it means a bigger fight for EA, but I don't think Valve should be looked at differently on these issues because they came first.

I was commenting on why Valve's digital releases are done the way they're done. Considering Valve literally built the DD business on the PC I think it's safe to say yes it will "be a battle" for EA. Some consumers look at Valve differently because of their years of positive actions to support the PC gaming industry on several different fronts. During that same period EA made negative actions that affected consumers. Instead of building goodwill over time or making a competitive product they are just trying to force consumers to choose.

I can't really think think of anything other than Skyrim that really competes on the same scale as Battlefield, though I am only a PC gamer and can't speak about console releases.

Modern Warfare 3, Saints Row 3, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Revelations just off the top of my head. All multi-million unit franchises and if we add late October into the mix it just gets worse. October and November are very crowded this year and EA is facing off against an entrenched genre leader in the Modern Warfare series. Not exactly an ideal timeline for giving your consumers any reason to hestitate on a purchase.
