Op Ed

Ars Technica - What EA will lose if Battlefield 3 remains off Steam.
This entire debate can be boiled down to the simple fact that people already use Steam, they like Steam, and they resent being forced to set up an account with another service to play a game. This is especially true when it's a brand-new, untested storefront that's being driven by a company that has given PC gamers every reason to be skeptical. It's unclear if Battlefield 3 will be enough of a draw to make customers forget that fact.

For many gamers, Steam is PC gaming and, while threats of a boycott often seem hollow, in this case it will be as if the game simply doesn't exist for many Steam users.

Valve did exactly the same when they forced all Counter-Strike players into Steam at the time. Without this move Steam wouldn't have been one bit as successfull, so it's only logical for the competitors to do the same!

Except they're a few years too late.

Battlefield 3 is not a big enough game to force change. It's big, but not that big. Ultimately you'll still have plenty of people that won't bother because managing another download-management environment is just a hassle. And you won't pick up those on-the-fencers that would buy in huge droves during any Steam sale. This will damage sales, I'd guess at least 5-10% on launch and probably at least 40% over the tail. The community won't be as strong, especially without that tail, the game will die sooner, and it will perform better on consoles.

Steam is the only dl-management software on my computer. It has nothing to do with multiplayer and friends, as I have no friends on Steam. It's just that it is one-stop shopping and having to deal with more software to load, or have sitting in the background, doesn't seem worthwhile.
