The Stanley Parable

Mod DB now offers the debut release of The Stanley Parable, described as a mod for Half-Life 2, though HL2 is not actually required since it can be played using the free Source SDK (thanks BlueWolf72). Here's a trailer and here's the intentionally minimal description:

The Stanley Parable is an experimental narrative-driven first person game. It is an exploration of choice, freedom, storytelling and reality, all examined through the lens of what it means to play a video game.

You will make a choice that does not matter.

You will follow a story that has no end.

You will play a game you cannot win.

...it's actually best if you don't know anything about it before you play it :D!

Maybe it's just me but it has this whole Hitchhikers Guide kind of vibe to it.

AAA RPG developers such as BioWare and Bethesda have been "experimenting" with this feature for the past decade.

Took me a second but I thought that was funny.

"Nobody wants to be nobody in America. Ed is the apotheosis of a prevailing American syndrome. It used to be that someone became famous because they were special. Now people are considered special just for being famous. Fame, itself, is its own virtue.

I played this last night and really enjoyed it. Made me think of a more interactive, less esoteric version of Dear Esther. Quite polished too.

I didn't see an ad... Looks like this is at least worth a download though.

A 30 second ad in front of a preview that's only 60 seconds? Seriously?
