They should be able to learn the fight mechanics because they aren't that difficult most of the time.
First off, the Cata bosses (dont know about Firelands) were as difficult as they had ever been.
While trial by error may have worked for the players of your guild, it doesn't work for most of the player base. When I'm telling you that people that DID NOT watch the videos and read strats so they werent relying on everyone else to fill them in, and they were not learning from people that know the fights...then obviously they do need to do some homework. The raids these days are all tuned with Blizzard knowing people are using Deadly Boss Mod and being able to learn the mechanics online. The raids would never be as hard as they are if that that mod and online strat vids weren't possible.
Trial by error would have meant an even greater waste of time because many of the people were incapable of grasping simple tasks. Most raids, at launch of Cata, all it took was 1 person messing up to wipe the raid. Healers were nerfed massively when the class changes hit, Priests in particular. There were also restrictions (2 per fight in 10man) in place preventing Battle Res spells from being overused in boss fights.
I don't know when you last raided, but the pre-Cata class changes and the mechanics changes in the expansion are not what you were used to in WoTLK and earlier.
