The Lord of the Rings: War in the North in November

WBIE announces U.K. release plans for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, Snowblind Studios' upcoming Tolkien-inspired action/RPG. They say the game's U.K. launch is expected in November, which is presumably the release window for the game in other territories, as well. Here's the deal:

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Snowblind Studios today announce The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, the anticipated new video game based on the revered The Lord of the Rings novels and films, will launch in the UK in November, 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Games for Windows. The gameís Collectorís Edition, featuring behind-the-scenes looks at the game development, a specially crafted art book, digital download content and more, will also launch in November.

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, rated BBFC 18 (tbc), transports players to unknown lands, as yet unexplored in film, as they journey to the Northern lands of Middle-earth. Intertwining the characters and storyline of the novel and films, the game takes place in parallel with the well-known Ring Bearerís quest, but in the equally harsh and contested lands to the North, as the battle for Middle-earthís survival rages.

Developed by Snowblind Studios, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is an Action-RPG featuring a unique 3-player co-op system. Gamers must battle, explore and journey together, balancing their strengths and weakness as a cohesive Fellowship of Human, Elf and Dwarf, or falter and perish in their journey. In every aspect of the game Ė combat, exploration, healing, even loot gathering Ė the Fellowship plays a vital role.

Unbelievable. This is the kind of title you need to release in July when there's nothing else to play and people will pick it up because they're bored.

Oh come on guys, you all know what November means since at least 1995. Now we're gonna criticize classic November game releases too?

It's not november game releases in general, it's releasing a game that doesn't have a huge following at roughly the same time as Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Diablo 3 and god knows what else.

They have an IP that people love, but the game is not part of a series that gamers are familiar with so they'll be skeptical and skeptical gamers at a time when they have a ton of other AAA titles to choose from means you're killing your own sales.

Creston's right on the money. Early summer release would have done them wonders for sales. Maybe they couldn't get it done in time, who knows. Maybe they actually think they can compete with the behemoths that are coming out this november. Either way, they shot themselves in the foot and will probably blame it on the PC gaming market.

Exactly, I'm twiddling my thumbs for entertainment atm.

Me Too, I am actually looking more forward to playing this game with my friends more than I am Diablo 3. This game looks like itís a lot more fun. But itís the Coop thatís appealing.

Well I did buy Settlers 7 gold for 12 bucks from Get Go Games - another English online game service. Unfortunately their client doesn't work - at least on my PC - and their tech support was useless - methinks this is some mom and pop operation - so I was forced to cancel my order, grr. Just hope Steam or D2D puts in on sale soon. I'm back playing NWN2 and FO:NV atm. Hoping we get some real news about Neverwinter Online at Gencon this week. Oh well, 20 more stinkin days untill DXHR.

Games like this that come out in november but get lost in the shuffle generally make my steam wish list, and then I pick them up at 1/2 price or lower during the steam summer sale.

Someone from EA once said that November was still the best time to release a game sales-wise, regardless of what the competition was.

Essentially, a game released during the busiest month of game releases would still sell more copies than it would if it had came out during a slow time like summer.

I've been criticizing those since about 2001. Releasing 17 games in the space of two weeks doesn't exactly help sales for ANY of them.

Oh well, this will make a nice 5 dollar pickup next summer.

In their defense the early parts of the year are pretty packed now-a-days as well. They would have to delay it until next Summer at this point to avoid competition.

You and me both Cutter. July is always slow. Thankfully August has a few nice titles and some great Guild Wars 2 reveals at Gamescom and Pax Prime.

But yes on topic, this game will just get lost in the glut in November. I generally only buy one or two titles in November and December and there's usually a dozen +.

Yeah, not the brightest decision.

"Hey, when are we going to release our niche Lord of the Rings title?"
"How about November?"
"What else is coming out then?"
"Oh, just minor stuff. MW3, Skyrim, Minecraft. You know, nothing to worry about."
"KA-CHING!"

Unbelievable. This is the kind of title you need to release in July when there's nothing else to play and people will pick it up because they're bored.
