The blood bank likes me, they like me because I have O- blood which is the universal donor type. However, until I gave blood this morning I was "really special." Not only was I O-, I was what they called CMV negative.
CMV is cytomegalovirus. From wiki:
"Cytomegalovirus is a viral genus of the viral group known as Herpesviridae or herpesviruses. It is typically abbreviated as CMV: The species that infects humans it is commonly known as human CMV (HCMV) or human herpesvirus-5 (HHV-5), and is the best studied of all cytomegaloviruses"
Being CMV negative meant I had never been exposed to CMV. I did not have the CMV anti-bodies in my blood. Which in turn, meant I didn't have CMV in my blood. This only gains significance when you find out that, "HCMV is found throughout all geographic locations and socioeconomic groups, and infects between 50% and 80% of adults in the United States (40% worldwide)."
Because I was CMV negative my blood was considered "special" because it could be given to immune suppressed individuals, especially neonates -- the blood bank staff actually referred to it as "baby's blood." And my blood was put is special (different than standard) blood bags in part so it could be easily separated into smaller units -- neonates don't need much blood.
However, this morning when they printed out my form my CMV- status was no longer there. Apparently sometime between April 8th and June 3rd I was, unknowingly, exposed to CMV. So while they still like me as an O- donor, I am no longer "really special". |
