Ships Ahoy - Call of Duty: Black Ops Annihilation

Activision Publishing announces the release of the Windows and PlayStation 3 editions of the Annihilation DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops, adding four new multiplayer maps and new zombie content to the military shooter sequel. "Annihilation delivers four of the best Black Ops multiplayer maps, and a mind blowing new Zombies experience with Shangri La," said Treyarch Studio Head, Mark Lamia. "With Annihilation, fans are really going to have a lot of fun continuing to play Black Ops online for a long time to come." Here's a reminder of the contents of the DLC:

  • "Hangar 18," buried deep within the military black site Area 51, where gamers will battle through experimental weapons labs, the SR-71 test hangar and a mysterious autopsy room.
  • "Drive-In," where players engage in close-quarters combat through a 1960s drive-in theater, complete with snack shack and a classic arcade.
  • "Silo," a massive multilevel battleground tucked within a super-secret Soviet era nuclear missile site.
  • "Hazard," perched on the verdant Cuban cliffside, where gamers traverse a coastal golf course fit for a dictator. This is the only set of links where the hazards shoot back.
  • "Shangri-La," the all-new Zombies experience, which transports players to a mythical paradise overrun with the undead. Face off against new species of zombies and navigate a treacherous labyrinth of underground caverns, all set within a lost jungle shrine.

It's an alpha test. They want to test their web infrastructure to make sure it works, and it doesn't melt when they actually release the game. I don't know why that's surprising. The beta test should be less focused.

I hope that's not the case I mean it's functional but its a lot of hoops to jump through. People whine about Steam being a dominant platform but tying all of the functionality to EA websites and Origin is effectively the same thing.

They open and close it periodically Batman, you just gotta keep trying. It's only running until Monday and it is a bit rough around the edges so you aren't missing much. They chose a very tight infantry map that only features one vehicle for the test, it's more about stressing the server infrastructure. Oh and you can only launch the game through Origin or Battlelog, it has no in-game server browser at all and requires 2 browser plugin installations. Let's hope that stuff is alpha only.

Looking at their previous attempts at server browsers, and their web implementations of battlefield heroes and battlefied free play, I am sure what you are seeing is what they are going to do. WHich is sad.

Awww, I'm disappointed there isn't 10 posts in here already asking why they would ever make something millions of people buy.

What a shame. And here I was hoping for a totally misinformed lecture about business from someone who identifies with corporations more than other human beings. Shucks!

Hey let's make this personal for no reason! Yay! This thread is so awesome!

Nothing you say can outweigh the stupidity thrown at this series for being successful.

It may be due to people grown weary from the same old recycled crap OVER AND OVER AGAIN and no longer care. Sleeping Maybe their sights are focused on the forthcoming BF3 Drummer , among other new refreshing titles...........

I didn't realize, but I had "Contact me about EA's products, news, events and promotions." unchecked in my EA account's settings. You need it checked to get an invite. Still haven't received one, though.
