John Carmack Excited About Gaming and RAGE 2

John Carmack tells IndustryGamers that after all these years his enthusiasm for gaming may be at an all time high. "For the foreseeable future, Iím more excited about gaming right now than I have been in really a long time - probably than I have been ever," the id Software Technical Director tells them. "The technology is exciting, weíre doing fabulous things, itís just great on all sorts of levels. Iím far from burned out or feeling that the genres are tapped out." He describes enthusiasm for Tech 5, mentions they're already doing research on Tech 6, and makes slightly more concrete references to a RAGE sequel than his remarks during E3 to GameSpot that "it's certainly heading that way." This time around he says: "but Iím psyched for what weíre going to do in Rage 2, how weíre going to really play up some of the aspects that it turned out werenít our bread and butter, previously but added to the game. Thereís a lot more we can do here thatíll make it fun."

But id is not just John Carmack, there are other people there. Honestly id has been totally irrelevant for years now. They have still not been able to make a story driven FPS. And their days of success with making the engines that empowered other developers in making story driven FPS have gone down away as well. What will happen to id and all those people who don't launch rockets into space if this game does not do well?

The large majority of guys who work at id are very well off. id pays a REALLY good salary to its staff. As for id being irrelevant, that's just nuts. Their last game sold like 4 or 5 MILLION copies, and it was a PC exclusive. How does that make them irrelevant? Just because you didn't like Doom 3 doesn't somehow change the fact that it was a huge success for them financially.

The engine hardly got licensed, true, and in that they took a blow compared to their quake engines which were used by almost everyone. But Carmack himself has stated several times that they never survived off their licensing, and that he didn't mind not having so many licensees anymore, since it saved a ton of support work.

Plus, judging from the videos and such, if Tech 5 streams seamlessly, it might genuinely be the best engine around right now. I have no idea if id plans on licensing it or not, or whether it can give Unreal 3/4 some competition, but I think licensees will likely give it a very long look.

It's hard to discover people's motives. But some might accuse John of being "excited about gaming" as self serving hype for an about to be released game that probably has a lot of jobs and id existence riding on it.

Carmack literally has "Fuck You" money. He's rich enough to have a hobby of launching rockets into space. Somehow I doubt he's worried about Rage not selling enough and him not being able to put food on the table.

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

Your not doing fabulous things john you are making crap monster shooters that are garbage. And trying to rip off Borderlands with a cheap crap remake is even worse.

How about you stop your 1980's lectures on technology and just STFU.

The guy invents the FPS genre and you're telling him to STFU? The guy has continually set the bar in gaming engines the last 20 years.

Go buy a Summer's Rain and douche the sand out of your vagina, damn whiner.
Invented the FPS genre? The things kids say and believe today. Wall

Rage was in development before Borderlands. Borderlands is also incredibly derivative itself anyway. Shoot for the stars when you troll man, this kind of thing is just paper thin. Next time tell people how John Carmack is holding up the US budget or something.

Who knows. It's hard to read Carmack. He gets excited by the iPhone and by the eight thousand year old 360, but he's no longer excited by pushing the envelope on the current latest hardware.

I think he likes the iPhone for that exact reason: the mobiles are still so underpowered for what we're trying to cram onto them (WOOOO MORE JAVA!) that a good programmer can single-handedly still whip up something that's way more impressive than the competition. He may not feel that way about PC hardware, which is why he kinda lost his enthusiasm.

That's how it has seemed to me.

Did he rape your daughter or something? Why the anger? Really, you're a nobody telling a pioneer of gaming to STFU on some website. You sound like my little brother who hates anything or anyone better than him.

Conversely, it's not like John needs money so I can't really see him whoring himself out for the sake of a few more bucks. Let's face it, he's one of the few guys left who have been around since day one who still has street cred.
Afaik, he lost all cred when he said (paraphrasing here, because he's not worth looking it up), he didn't care what his customers thought or wanted. If Bethesda tells him the make a statement to help sales, he will make a statement. It's his job.

That's certainly a surprise. After doom 3 he basically flat-out said "I'm doing one more engine and that's it."

To be fair he's made it clear that any "new" engines will just be updated versions of Tech 5. They're never going to build an engine from scratch ever again.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about doing an engine with voxels and ray tracing years ago but the technology for it doesn't exist yet.

Honestly, that's what I'm thinking as well. This seems to smack more of PR than anything else. I too am glad John has found his rage, the guy was always a little too controlled & robotic for me, a typical genius programmer stereotype.

I hear they now keep a bear in the id offices just for John to wrestle.
It's a big arse bear like as in he can't get his arms around it in a, bear hug, kinda thing.
