The large majority of guys who work at id are very well off. id pays a REALLY good salary to its staff. As for id being irrelevant, that's just nuts. Their last game sold like 4 or 5 MILLION copies, and it was a PC exclusive. How does that make them irrelevant? Just because you didn't like Doom 3 doesn't somehow change the fact that it was a huge success for them financially.
The engine hardly got licensed, true, and in that they took a blow compared to their quake engines which were used by almost everyone. But Carmack himself has stated several times that they never survived off their licensing, and that he didn't mind not having so many licensees anymore, since it saved a ton of support work.
Plus, judging from the videos and such, if Tech 5 streams seamlessly, it might genuinely be the best engine around right now. I have no idea if id plans on licensing it or not, or whether it can give Unreal 3/4 some competition, but I think licensees will likely give it a very long look.

Rage was in development before Borderlands. Borderlands is also incredibly derivative itself anyway. Shoot for the stars when you troll man, this kind of thing is just paper thin. Next time tell people how John Carmack is holding up the US budget or something. |

Who knows. It's hard to read Carmack. He gets excited by the iPhone and by the eight thousand year old 360, but he's no longer excited by pushing the envelope on the current latest hardware.
I think he likes the iPhone for that exact reason: the mobiles are still so underpowered for what we're trying to cram onto them (WOOOO MORE JAVA!) that a good programmer can single-handedly still whip up something that's way more impressive than the competition. He may not feel that way about PC hardware, which is why he kinda lost his enthusiasm.
That's how it has seemed to me. |

Creston To be fair he's made it clear that any "new" engines will just be updated versions of Tech 5. They're never going to build an engine from scratch ever again.
I'm pretty sure he was talking about doing an engine with voxels and ray tracing years ago but the technology for it doesn't exist yet. |

Honestly, that's what I'm thinking as well. This seems to smack more of PR than anything else. Conversely, it's not like John needs money so I can't really see him whoring himself out for the sake of a few more bucks. Let's face it, he's one of the few guys left who have been around since day one who still has street cred.

I too am glad John has found his rage, the guy was always a little too controlled & robotic for me, a typical genius programmer stereotype.
I hear they now keep a bear in the id offices just for John to wrestle.
It's a big arse bear like as in he can't get his arms around it in a, bear hug, kinda thing.
