AU RA18+ Rating Approved "In-Principle"

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has word that the federal and state governments in Australia have reached an in-principle agreement to provide an R18+ rating for video games, after years of debate over how to bring adult games to the territory. "The introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games will provide better advice to parents and help prevent children and teenagers from accessing unsuitable material," said Federal Justice Minister Brendan O'Connor. "Once introduced, the new classification will also afford adults the opportunity to view material designed for adults."

Didn't I read somewhere recently the AU gov wants to kill the 15+ rating and make them all 18+? Then they will probably require stores to hide them in the back room or something. They can't do all that without a 18+ rating existing.

It's in South Australia only that the attorney general wants that to happen.

Bizarrely, if you want to have an R18+ rating for the entire country, you need unanimous approval from all attorney's general, but if you want to ramp up your own states prohibition by eliminating the MA15+ category and saying that all games for the 15+ segment are now 18+, it's fine...

Mike Rau is the new AG South Aus, taking over from Michael Atkinson, the previous asshole that was cockblocking the R18+ rating for all Aussies...

The idea of killing 15+ was here on Bluesnews. I think it was the guy who has been holding a mature rating up pushing it so he can claim victory when the R18 rating comes in.

In practical terms, even if 15+ is killed, it makes little difference - mature games will be allowed as R18 and those games that would have been 15+ are now R18, which will make approximately $0 difference in number of sales.

Yay, still doesn't fix the part where as a release region we are treated worse than South American countries that are waaayy behind us economically and pirate more things. Especially when you take into account our free trade agreements with the usa.

Well yay anyway.
