Gratuitous Tank Battles Announced

Independent developer Positech Games announces Gratuitous Tank Battles, an upcoming alternate-reality RTS/Tower Defense hybrid to follow Gratuitous Space Battles. The concept behind this is that the stalemated ground warfare of World War I never broke, and the "Great War" still rages on in the year 2114, though the announcement includes this tagline: "Victory is in our sights though, and we expect it will all be over by Christmas 2114." The game is currently projected for release on Windows and OS X before this Christmas (2011). Here are some screenshots, and here's a bit from the announcement:
Gratuitous Tank Battles is an RTS/Tower Defense hybrid with online elements and customisable units. The player can take the role of the defender or the attacker in a series of top-down explodey fun. A built-in map editor will allow easy sharing of custom maps and defensive challenges with other GTB players in a similar fashion to GSB's challenge system.

GTB takes place in an alternate reality where the 'central powers' never surrender and the 'great war' continues for two hundred years. Soldiers still fight in the trenches of the Somme, although rifles have (mostly) become laser rifles and giant armored mechs stride across no-mans land. The two great armies continue to fight with patriotic zeal and little memory of who Franz Ferdinand was and what happened to him. One thing is certain: It will all be over by Christmas 2114.

I don't understand where this anomosity for Cliffski and Positech Games is coming from. I'm puzzled.

He made a series of whiny posts on his site that ended up getting picked up by the gaming media. I'm sure when his blog is read as a whole it probably doesn't come off as constantly complaining, but when you only end up hearing about the controversial stuff it makes it seem like the guy is always whining about something.

That, and his flagship game is considered by some to not be a game at all.

I got GSB in some sort of indie bundle and I still fail to see the "fun" in the game. I think my complaints lie mostly with the way battles are conducted, literally involving no input from the player beyond placing the units and clicking Fight. This was excusable in Master of Orion because you had a wonderful 4x game behind it, but it just made this game feel rather boring.

Actually even the fleet and ship design was just trial & error. I went into it expecting to see all kinds of nutty shit blow up and weapons going off everywhere. Instead when I stopped even trying to play there were references to two or three build types that owned the rest of the game and that was it.

For me the problem in GSB was that in designing a ship and it's outfit, I had no actual stats to go by, just flavor text that barely told me anything useful. It was literally trial and error with a delayed, 5-10 minute feedback.

The game looked like a lot of fun, but had almost zero "game" to it.

Thats why it was called "battles" it is only battles. Some people like strategy better than tactics, and that's a game about setting your fleet and letting it go.

BTW, in MOO, you had the option of doing all the fights round by round, I usually picked that since I liked micromanaging, but in that at most you had like 7 stacks of units so it wasn't bad at all.

Some more form and structure may make GSB more fun (or fun), but I'm a firm believer that tower defense games belong on the phone (where they're a great way to kill 10 minutes) not the computer (where they're casual games.)

You really should try Defense Grid. I couldn't imagine trying to play that game on a phone.

For that matter, there are a bunch of TD Maps for Warcraft 3 and Starcraft II that are a lot of fun and something I could never see playing on the iPhone. Elements TD, Gems TD and Line Wars to name my favorites.

Cliffski,
I love tower defense games (I've purchased Defense Grid among a number of others both on steam and elsewhere) but this is NOT the way to break out of the $10 indie price point you were complaining about. A game like this I'm going to look for a $10 or less steam sale.

If you want to sell games even in the $30 range, they've got to be bigger than casual games. They've got to have content and graphics worth paying the extra for.
