On PC Skyrim

The Skyrim Fan Interview on the Bethesda Softworks Forums discusses the upcoming installment in the Elder Scrolls series of RPGs with Bethesda's Todd Howard, Bruce Nesmith, and Matt Carofano (thanks IGN). Along the way Todd outlines what will differentiate the PC edition of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim:

64-bit specific exe? Not at this time. As far as UI, it visually looks the same across the platforms, but the controls are entirely different. There’s also a lot of “power user” stuff we do with the keyboard from how favorites work, to quick saves, and more that is similar to what we’ve done before in that area. We’re packing a lot of info on the screen and the whole interface is much less ‘look at giant fonts!’ than, say, Oblivion. The PC version also gets higher res textures, larger render modes, and a bunch of other effects you can scale up if your machine is a beast. Last but most important, is the Creation Kit we’ll be releasing for the PC. Modding the game and making it your own is very important to us and our fans, so we’re going to keep doing whatever we can in that area.

Yesterday I mentioned a previous quote regarding higher resolution textures for the PC. I found it again here: http://www.ausgamers.com/features/read/3076322
AusGamers: Now let’s step it back a bit, I want to talk a bit about Creation Engine. You guys have been demoing the game on Xbox 360, is there any particular reason why you haven’t shown the PC version? Because clearly that would be the higher end.

Todd: Yeah it does, obviously the PC version looks better. It has higher textures, it can run much higher resolution and a lot more graphic features. We tend to show it on 360 so that it’s a good baseline for people to look at. So when they then see the PC version it’s going to go up. We’d rather do that than have people see the 360 later and it takes a step down.

We’re really excited with how it looks on the 360 and the PS3. So we do author the art the same for all the platforms, it’s just that they render it differently. Also for things like this [tradeshows] -- I don’t know if people realise -- but as a game developer, the 360 is just much easier to show it on, from getting it started, to showing it, to controlling it, it’s just much easier to demo on logistically.
It's hard to say whether that means the textures are truly higher resolution. Are the file sizes actually larger on the PC? Are they they exact same texture files but are downsampled on consoles?

All in all I liked the interview. Sounds like it'll be a better game than both Morrowind and Oblivion.

The Elder Scrolls games have always had cookie cutter NPCs. That doesn't have anything to do with consoles.

It has everything to do with the sand box style of game Bethesda tends to make.

I will give Bethesda credit for supplying nice mod tools and making single player sand box style games in the first place. I think their games are pretty good.

Really? 'Cause Oblivion struck me as a bog standard console action RPG. Yes, it was a BIG world (as was Morrowind), but it was mostly empty and/or cookie cutter (due to console bias).

I'm curious, what makes it something "nobody else dares even attempt"?

Then it looks like you will be holding off for a very long time. thats not going to change nor do I ever see it happening by a mod.

Why not? A mod for that was done on Oblivion...

TES Oblivion and Morrowind were both great (except for the cliff racers in the latter, heh). Fallout 3 - also great. What the mod community has done with some of those titles - also pretty great. I'm fully expecting Skyrim to be equally great.

I agree, some people get so bent out of shape about games not being to their standards that they just can’t accept the game the way it is. I’m perfectly happy with what I saw from the videos. I don’t get why so many are acting like they are and bitching so much. As long as I have fully rebindable keys and higher rez textures and it doesn’t feel like I’m playing a console version. I’m good to go.

I really didn’t see anything in the game that felt to me that the game looked too consolized, I got a firsthand look of the game at E3 and it was pretty nice. This is how it is now with games. Developers are always going to be playing both markets. Either adapt to it or don’t buy it.

Yeah, that generally happens when we get fucked before we get kissed. Run Todd's post through a bullshit filter and you get...

"Yes, it's a console game designed first and foremost with consoles in mind, so you're an idiot if you're expecting a good CRPG for the PC. However, we'd still like you to buy the game regardeless because we'll be releasing an editor so you PC people can fix the game eventually...sorta kinda."

that's exactly how I see it. Mr. Howard may keep talking garbage until the cows come home: As with every other Proudly-Made-For-Console title, Skyrim is not gonna come anywhere near my PCs.

Damn, you guys are fucking bitchy tonight.

Sorry all the sloppy blow jobs are in the thread about the oblivion mod, you must have missed it.

Oblivion was a great game, not being used to RPGs I played on a higher difficulty level and it was challenging and great fun. I started a second game on the standard difficulty afterward because there was some obvious weirdness for playing the way I had, and then I could understand what all the whinging was about with respect to the auto leveling.

If this new one doesn't have any horrible DRM I'll buy it ... otherwise HARRRR

<sarcasm> also the idea of letting users modify games it great, I hope this idea catches on with other developers</sarcasm>

Video game graphics peaked, there isn't much left to improve.

That's not really true at all. We're far from photorealism. You may not consider photorealism to be a desirable goal but from a technical standpoint, that's the pinnacle.
Sry, i meant from a players and the sales standpoint, not technical.

There isn't much more to gain from "better graphics", people flock to new interface gadgets or 3D (which has nothing to do with "visually better graphics") or they'll just want to have already established gameplay features in an established visual enviroment.

Just look at Crysis. To sell more copies of Crysis 2 than Crysis 1, they'll had to dumb down visual quality for the consoles. And the console sales of Crysis 2 are very good. Graphics are now sufficient enough for most players. "Better Graphics" is no longer a viable sales argument. Still important, but no longer more important than everything else.

Worst idea in game programming history, scalable creatures/NPCs/items/loot.

I hope they wont be in Skyrim. But I wont keep my fingers crossed.
