| So the general consensus is that it's everyone's fault except the piece of shit thieves who stole and leaked an incomplete product and that this clearly means the game will sell better, even though there's not a shred of evidence to that effect? It's beginning to sound a lot like TechDirt. |

No, I wouldn't because my word that the charges are unauthorized should be all that is required as proof. And that is all that credit card companies require. This tracking just gives Valve a tool to use to dispute that the charges weren't unauthorized. That doesn't help the customer. That helps Valve.
Plus the whole issue is moot because Valve will just permanently disable your Steam account if you dispute charges made to it and forbid that credit card from ever being used again on Steam via its policy. See https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9114-WGHM-0381
In the meantime, you can think that Valve has hired someone to sit there and watch every tiny thing you personally do on Steam. Valve doesn't have to hire anyone to do it. The Steam software does it for them. |

I'm pretty sure what Beamer described has to do with SteamGuard which is indeed optional and allows you to bind your Steam account to certain physical machines, thus making it harder for haXX0rs to hack into Steam accounts. No one can opt out of Steam's spyware survey as far as I know. Steam survey is an integral feature of Steam that can not be turned off.

The fact still remains that they committed a crime. They knowingly and intentionally accessed a private server using the credentials of a member of the press and proceeded to upload files to the Internet not intended for either their or our consumption. Whether this act increased preorders or not does not mitigate the fact that what they did is criminal and liable for prosecution. In order for there to be a civil crime, you have to show damages. Good luck doing that in this case, since there seems to be nothing but positive word of mouth regarding the leak.

You can go update your Facebook page instead. Everyone needs to know who you are and what you are doing right now anyway.
You understand that your credit card company and HMO have about a billion more damning pieces of information than a hardware ID, right? Yes, anything and everything should be allowed by any company because there is always some company which is worse. Valve also stated in the article that it had more than just a hardware ID.
Look, consumers should be able to play their games anonymously and left alone if they choose. There is absolutely no reason not to make any tracking on Steam completely optional. It's like saying there should be no opt-out of spam because the company can get your email address elsewhere or because unsolicited email can benefit you.

If I have to explain to you why a person's privacy is important, then you are exactly what is wrong with people today and why companies are allowed to get away with this crap. You can't explain! You can't explain how a hardware ID held by Steam damages you in any way. You can't explain how it helps some anonymous "corporate overlord."
You understand that your credit card company and HMO have about a billion more damning pieces of information than a hardware ID, right? Hell, can you articulate a single scenario where a hardware ID can hurt you? I can articulate at least half a dozen where Steam having it can help you... |

Yes, fuck the customer because the corporate overlords' interest is more important than the customer's. Explain. Seriously, explain how the customer is hurt here. Then explain how the "corporate overlords'" are helped.

That right there is a good reason not to use Steam if you care about your privacy. So much for the notion that Steam is not spyware.
If your Steam account ever gets unauthorized charges you'll be happy they can do this. In the meantime, you can think that Valve has hired someone to sit there and watch every tiny thing you personally do on Steam. That person calls your mother every night to let her know how much time you played and how many strippers you killed in DNF. This is his job - spying on you. |

Using a hardware ID number, Valve also determined that the computer used to access the game preview code did not match the computer used by the authorized GMC journalist, the complaint added, suggesting that the access was unauthorized and unknown by the journalist. Valve said that it has more information about the allegedly-offending Steam account and the relevant hardware ID number That right there is a good reason not to use Steam if you care about your privacy. So much for the notion that Steam is not spyware. That information should not be tracked by Valve in the first place especially for normal Steam accounts because there is no need for it but you know it is. Valve will be hit with a subpoena for this information in 3,2,1...

Yeah that Uplink demo is 100% original level content, even the dialogue. if you've never played it try it as it's a sort of "missing scene" from Half-Life. It's pretty good length for a demo too.
And yeah, this DX leak was *really* impressive. My only complaint is the 3'rd person when climbing ladders and stuff.. but we knew that was coming. In every other way it's full on the spirit of the original game.
Hold off on playing it so you get the best experience when you get the real copy.. just have no doubt you're getting a great game. |

Drayth wrote on Jul 6, 2011, 11:18: That leak convinced me to pre-order the game for sure. Id say it probably did more good than harm on the whole.
If a game company thinks they have a hit game on their hands, part of the marketing's budget should be given to the developer to have them build a unique level to use as a free demo, if you as me.
Half-Life: Uplink is still one of the best demos ever, imo (though it came out after the game's release). I hadn't heard of the leak until a couple weeks ago when a friend was telling me how awesome the game was since he played the leak several times over. He was talking about how it solidified his decision to pre-order the game, since it showed off how awesome it was. Since the leak was only 1/3rd of the game (or that's what my friend said) its like having a HUGE demo.
I haven't tried the leak, but my friend talking about it certainly moved the game up on my interested in buying early list and not waiting for a sale.
half life Uplink... Remind me of that again? I don't know if I played that, it has parts that weren't in the half life game right?
Thats one reason why I loved the demo of Space Quest 6, it had an entire exclusive fully voiced sequence that wasn't in the retail game.
Edit: Since valve apparently forgot about it, someone worked up an installer that puts it as a mod into hl1 steam so people can play the original uplink. http://www.halflifeuplink.com/steamlink/
