I just played the maps that won 5th and 4th place. I thought I would play them in reverse order. They were both very well done. They used the game mechanics in a unique way and I had to give it a bit of thought. It didn't feel like a simple rehash of any of the official levels.
The 5th place map is good, but I did like the 4th place one better. With that in mind, I look forward to trying the 3rd through to 1st place maps in the next day or two!
I also wish they would implement a more intuitive way to access custom maps. At the very least, add a simple "custom map" menu option that lists the installed custom maps. |

Isn't this how 3rd-party maps work in the first Portal too? Or did they change it after I played it last? Portal had a menu option for custom maps. |

Yes, it was the same in Portal. I said take off because, going by Valve's inclusion of a tat store, they appeared at least at one point to want people to play regularly, rather than once and forgetting about it (how else could you explain it?).
The only way this could happen is with regular new content and the best and cheapest way to achieve that would be through strong community support. An in-game portal ( ) could have provided a simple mechanism for the promotion and delivery of said content (see indie title Super Meat Boy for an example), giving fans what they wanted, encouraging development and presumably making Valve more money.
Hopefully they'll add it later but interest will have largely evaporated by then (if it hasn't already). Just seems a missed opportunity is all. Maybe they don't find it fun any more. |

Nice to bring attention to new maps though. Hopefully they'll add it in their free summer DLC. It isn't that hard to play custom maps, but I agree they could make it a lot better, which would have more people playing/making custom maps, which is good for everybody! |

| I'm looking forward to playing these. I didn't even realize there was a mapmaking contest going on, or even that there was Portal 2 SDK out for making maps. |
