Crysis 2 Ultra Update (DX11) Released

GeForce.com now offers the long promised patch for Crysis 2 to add DirectX 11 support to Crytek's first-person shooter sequel. This is a three-part release, involving a new version 1.9 patch, as well as the previously accidentally revealed DX11 Tessellation Pack with pre-tessellated geometries and a Hi Res Textures pack that will support both the DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 editions of the game for users with 64-bit OSes and 1 GB graphics cards. One or more of the downloads are mirrored on AtomicGamer, Gamer's Hell, and WorthPlaying. To help understand what this is all about, an article on GeForce.com explains how all this works. Finally, an update on the Crytek Website says to expect the map editor for the game on Wednesday. Here's the explanation on how to update, depending on where you acquired the game:

If your copy of Crysis 2 works through EA Download, EA Origin, Steam, or another digital distribution service with uniquely protected game executables do not download the file labelled Patch 1.9 as your copy will have to receive the patch through their services. You are free to download the DirectX 11 update and high resolution packs, however, as they work with all versions of the game – just ensure you’re patched to version 1.9 before installing them."

By my calculations the game looks 50% better. Maybe it's in my head but the particle effects look fantastic now.

Wrong. DX11 tessellation uses texture information to recreate (approximately) geometric details present in the artist's original high-poly model, but not present in the game's low-poly copy of that model. It's not just a system for smoothing off corners.

I think it looks awesome compared to Crysis 1. I'm running good hardware and it just looks soo good. I am pleased, and I'm picky..okay one thing though..the cars are WAAAYYYY too shiny! That's about it.

MEH! I installed the 1.9, High Res, and DX11 patch and quickly checked it out, and so far it appears a little bit better, but not as much as I had anticipated and/or hoped for. Crysis 1 maxed out still looks better IMHO.

I'm curious about everyone else’s opinion.

It's not much of a difference.

But then I didn't expect much change. There's no magic switch that is going to make a model 8000 faces when it was originally designed at 5000 (tesselation just doesn't count since it's just adding a few faces here and there at best smoothing an existing model) or a street scene suddenly being much more realistic without some artist getting their hands dirty and simply adding more props.

This game was designed to run smoothly on consoles. The ultimate "high res" would be to design it first on pc and then offer a "low res" version of the game for console. Yes yes I know that's dead in the water.

DX11 in general is over hyped. Or at the very least it was insanely over hyped in this situation.

Yeah, I agree with you man. I don't see too much difference with the High Res pack either, which seems more like smoke & mirrors now.

I was planning to buy crysis 2 down the road on steam sale but now thats been removed from steam crytek can suck it.

That's ok, they probably won't going to remove the limited installs anyway. EA doesn't want your money!

Crysis 2...enjoyed the SP game. When I upgrade at some point I look forward to playing it again with Dx11.

Origin...I added several serial #'s from Steam into Origin to have them registered as backups. When I put in the Bad Company 2 serial into Origin it asked me if I wanted to unlock the Digital Edition or the Digital Special Edition. I chose the Special Edition and I got the DLC and Vietnam for free. Sweet!

Note that that isn't the "limited edition", which means that you won't get Back to Karkand for free when it is released unlike if you were to preorder at retail or from Origin :-/

You gotta be kidding me.
Even the URL says Limited edition, but if you click on the link you will see right away it is the limited ed, and they list the Karkland pack as the extra DLC you get.

I want BF3, but I dont' want another download system clogging up my PC. I'm guessing if you even buy a boxed copy of BF3 it will use force an Origin account, or just an EA account or both? What the hells the difference.

Origin's functionality isn't anything to write home about but it doesn't do anything nefarious either. You can set it to never start with Windows just like Steam.

Attention EA: Bring the game back to Steam and I'll pay more than $10 for it.

I want it on Steam too, but apparently it was Steam who took it down because it didn't meet Valve's criteria.

Is that the reason why Battlefield 3 is also not available on Steam?

I'm pretty sure EA had said that Battlefield 3 would ONLY be available on Origin (for PC digital download.)

Oh well. No sale here if that is the case.
