Guild Wars 2 Underwater Combat Details

The ArenaNet Blog features a discussion of underwater combat in Guild Wars 2 from game designer Jonathan 'Chaplan' Sharp, offering screenshots showing off underwater environments and weapons, as well as a full outline of how this will work. There are also new impressions of the game floating around, as ArenaNet recently demonstrated the upcoming MMORPG sequel to a bunch of sites, who got to experience this aquatic aspect of the game firsthand. There are previews on G4tv.com, Massively, MMORPG.com (where they also have an ArenaNet Studio Tour), and PC Gamer. There's also an underwater combat video on GameSpot, and Guild Wars 2 Slovenija has clips with a pair of dungeons from the game.

Oh and yes, Wyldkat, that was the Engineer. Again played by someone with little experience in the game at probably low lvl. Still, looks quite fun I'd agree hehe.

Honestly I can't get excited over it. Originally they showed these epic abilities from a range of classes, but in the video you linked the vast majority of the time they just stand there and either whack on a creature or fire spells at it.
I will say the necromancer? black FX looked quite nice, as did some of the underwater effects, but I'm just not seeing anything to sell me on Guild Wars 2.

Well as usual in these videos there was a reason everyone was just standing around and only using three skills (though the dungeon may be low level, there is no indication what level it is), this video is showing a bunch of press people playing the game (mostly for the first time and certainly the first time in a group). They didn't know the mechanics clearly and they didn't know that positioning is key in GW2 and that you can avoid melee/ranged attacks and spells by dodging or just being outside the attack radius.

In fact one of my favorite GW2 news blogs participated in one of these dungeon attacks and talks directly about how nobody really knew what they were doing until they had played through the dungeon a time or two. They just didn't realize that in GW2 if you just stand there and trade blows, you will suck.

I edited after you posted, my bad lol.

Hey theres another vid they released, some combat gameplay in a dungeon called Catacombs. Features a Guardian, Necromancer, Ranger and I think a Warrior. Pretty wicked.

Wow... was that the Engineer that had the backpack and flamethrower? That looks really awesome. I really hope Engineers get goggles to wear. I really want to make a petite Engineer with pigtails that runs around with a big gun of some sort.

Ok, so someone from the team played WoW:Cat... I really never liked the water level...Nothing new here to see...move along! lol

You didn't even watch the video did ya? If you had you'd see it's 'very' different from WoW's underwater gameplay.

Yeah... WoW's underwater gameplay had no special abilities, so you'd still be firing a gun underwater, lol. Not to mention the underwater breathing item as either a craftable potion or a petrified turd (no joke) that you ate.

GW2 is also going to have special underwater pets for the pet classes too.

It's not jumping the shark, it's taming the shark which is..... pretty damn cool.

Every time I see a video or preview for this game I say to myself 'it cant get better than this'. Then they show new stuff like the amazing underwater mechanics and I stand corrected. ArenaNet needs to stop blowing my mind already!

Maybe I am wrong, maybe I am right. I just hope you guys aren't falling for the hype machine. Wow, underwater levels where you have quest, kill, and not die... Oo
If you were right, I would be agreeing with you.

I'm just going to forget I read underwater combat. To me that is jump the shark territory. But then again I haven't seen what they are showing before either...

Sounds more like swimming with/fighting the shark

Rock fucking on! In every game I always ask if there will be underwater zones/quests/combat as that's always the most fun and interesting place to be if done right.

The world of Tyria is a beautiful, dangerous place, with a ton of places to explore. We didn’t want the undersea zones to feel like a secondary experience compared to the land zones, so you’ll experience the full—ahem—depth of Guild Wars 2 content underwater. In addition to a wide variety of dynamic events, most dungeons have underwater content, and your personal story will also occasionally take you under the sea.

I love in the vid how hes talking about deep underwater zones, vendors, events, etc. Oh yeah, that's the stuff. I'm not going to lie, all this is giving me some mahogany here. I want to play this game now. If it's half as good as it seems right now it's going to fucking crush everything else out there. I am going to be all over this like cheap cologne on a whore!

Indeed.

I really hope they will consider having PVP areas that are above and below water too!

I also loved that the breathing device is an ACTUAL DEVICE, that you can SEE on your character.

I still can't believe this game won't have a subscription.

I would probably die if they announced group controlled ships with ship vs ship combat.

Extremely impressive.

I love that they've put so much thought into this with actually having underwater abilities and itemization.

The animations and environmental (hair, clothing, foliage) physics are incredibly impressive as well.
