Portal 2 Sells 3 Million

Gabe Newell says Portal 2 has sold more than three million copies since the puzzle/platformer sequel was released, reports Joystiq, saying Valve's managing director stated this at the Games For Change conference here in the big apple. Which platforms this comprises and whether this figure counts Steam sales are not clear.

I imagine PS3 sales would be the highest, considering PC is my first choice, but the fact that the PS3 version included the PC version, I purchased that instead.

PS3 sales would be hit by the PSN downtime though. That started a day after the game released.

As for the total figures, I assume they would follow the general sales trend that almost every other game these days follows... 50% xbox, 35% PS3, 15% PC.

Not saying it's a bad game, or undeserving of its sales, but that's really no big deal these days seeing as the amount of schlock that's so popular with the masses like reality TV. Hell, if anything it's almost the opposite when shite like CoD is getting several million people for beta signups knowing full well it may change how multiplayer is forever. Fuck, I miss when this was just a fringe element for real geeks.

I've noticed a pattern (or at least several instances) of sequels being mentioned without their identifying number in headlines here, of late. That should change. Portal 2 is not Portal (and nor will Portal 3 be).

First it's the Firefox version numbers, now Blue's right

I couldn't find an example in 200 article titles (4 pages in news forum).

I'm thinking Portal 2 is more of a console game anyway so I'd bet the STEAM sales aren't more than 20% of the total. Pure speculation.

Well then you'd be wrong.

Worst case scenario, 3 million is the grand total across all platforms, digital and retail. What's to spin?

If Steam sales were only a very small portion of total sales, that makes Steam look bad.

"Gabe Newell says Portal 2 has sold more than three million copies [...] whether this figure counts Steam sales [is] not clear."

While I'd like to think Gabe Newell probably wouldn't throw out a number that didn't include Steam sales, the last sentence from Joystiq brings that into doubt.

For comparison, the first Portal had sold four million copies as of Portal 2's launch -- though that number doesn't take Steam into account.

Yeah, God Forbid they ever release PC specific numbers they might let the secret out of the bag that you can still make money on PC Gaming. I get so mad when I see sales reports of games and then they comment how little the PC version sells. Of course Steam doesn't reveal their numbers and it makes it look like PC is a fail platform. I am a strong supporter of Steam (325 games purchased so far) but some things they do really piss me off!

3 million is good, right?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that at least 50% of the PC sales were on Steam.

The only number I'm interested in is what % of that was direct Steam purchases.
