On Red Orchestra 2 Ranked Servers and Anti-Cheat Measures

The Bash and Slash Forums have details on how dedicated servers will work for Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad, Tripwire Interactive's upcoming military shooter sequel. According to the explanation of someone claiming to be a member of the beta team, the game will support both ranked and unranked servers. Anyone can run either kind of server, though Tripwire will be monitoring ranked servers, and will boot them if they engage in shenanigans. Also, a post on PBBans based on a TWI conference on competitive gaming explains the game's anti-cheating plans (thanks Joao). Word is:

This is the first game (That I know of) to use both VAC and PunkBuster. I'm very happy that Tripwire decided to use both because I know the competitive community prefers using PunkBuster because of the additional functionality and streaming. Tripwire has gained a lot of my respect for listening to competitive gamers and PC gamers in general.

Lets hope other developers that favor VAC will see the light and offer players a choice in anti-cheat.

I've never had a problem with punkbuster

PunkBuster kicks you if you have the Steam overlay running while playing Battlefield 2.

PunkBuster kicks me if I play Enemy Territory Quake Wars.

0/2.

The TW guys are going to receive one of Evenbalance's devs tomorrow at their office to have them work PB to work flawlessly with Steam's overlay.

It really depends on how long you are gaming no? I still find modern tech shooters interesting, mainly because BC2 isn't really a modern tech shooter, its at best using some modern hand-held weaponry.

BF2 was gulf war era, nothing even remotely modern with some few exceptions. (It came from Desert Combat which was even more grounded in gulf-war era)

BF3 looks like it will feature really modern state-of-the-art vehicles and jets.

I didn't play cod MW or MW2 or BLOPS.

But i agree it is pretty hilarious, given how much it seems that modern shooters are around, but BF3 is really more about the vehicles and battlefield than just pea-shooters like in cod...

And i don't really feel like playing realistic ww2 shooters - i played Red Orchestra 1 and that BF2 mod, what was it.. forgotten hope? - and that cured me of all my ww2 urges, for life.

Well, one of the strength of this game, modtools, is already being put into good use. You have a WWI total conversion mod, Iron Europe, you have In Country, a Vietnam mod, you have RO40K, a Warhammer40K mod and there's a few more being made or rumored to being made. So settings diversity won't be something that this game won't lack.

Indeed, the choice is BF3 - i am sick to death of WW2 shooters

Considering how overdone modern warfare shooters are compared to WW2 shooters, this comment is sweet irony.

Yeah, both are over-saturated at this point and at least WW2 has been absent for a few years. We need more civil war shooters like Darkest of Days! Haha...

True, but they need to be a bit concerned about releasing around the same time as those other two games otherwise they'll lose out in revenue at release and be forced to drop the price.

Unreal Engine 3 tech is pretty old and tired, the lack of destruction alone puts it in second place to BF3. I've never been a fan of vehicle physics in UE3, I don't know if they can pull off a convincing tank sim with it or not. Personally I'd rather they focus 100% on infantry combat, but some people do enjoy the tank battles I guess.

RO2 has micro and macro destruction, anything can be destroyed in the game. And Alan confirmed a Summer release, so it'll avoid BF3 and MW3. The exact release date should be known next week, I believe.

Another thing, this game will have PBBans streaming, which is a more effective service than both VAC and PB I think. A cheater banned on a server is immediately banned on all servers.

That's cool, I heard that they were going to have some destruction in it. I didn't know they were aiming for summer release, was expecting a pre-order gets you into the beta sort of deal with an open ended release date.

I've seen a bunch more not get kicked. People think PB works because it tells you when it does something. VAC does its job quietly, which I much prefer.

VAC: somewhat useless.

Punkbuster: completely useless, plus a shoddy piece of programming.

Nothing beats a good group of admins when policing your server.

not likely, just look at the numbers for RO today and compare them to other older games like BF2.

RO has a very narrow audience, 100% PC developed with mod support or not it's never going to be an overwhelming success.

True, but look at a game like Counterstrike that is 100% PC with mod support, there is a ton of room to grow and potential, i'm not saying it's going to happen, but there is a chance. And a lot better chance then BF3 having a 5+ year lifespan (we all know NO ONE will be playing MW3 2 years after its launch).

Well, I have run PBSetup. Repeatedly, in fact. And I've spent hours searching through tech support threads on just about every forum even vaguely related to gaming to make Failbuster work right, and it never has.

I guess that one person who didn't have a problem getting Magicka co-op to work on release day magically caused all problems to be solved for everyone else. Maybe I can blink and cure Punkbuster of all bugs in a nanosecond.

Maybe you should close down those cheats before you join a server

I kid of course, all I've ever had to do is run PBsetup, I've never been kicked from it otherwise. I know some people have a time with PB which is why people bemoan its inclusion with announced games like this one. As for it not doing anything though I do see people kicked from Bad Company 2 servers frequently for using hacks.

I hope they don't go up against BF3, they won't stand much of a chance if they do.

They could pick up some numbers from people not willing to upgrade their OS and Graphics card but I don't know if that would be big enough to put a dent in BF3 player numbers.

I think TWI is looking at the long term, BF3/MW3 will blow them out of the water, no question there. But when people get bored of BF3/WM3 after a few months RO:HOS still still be going strong with tons of free content and mods (things the other games will lack).
ROHOS is looking at the long term (ie. Counterstrike) other then the short term immediate sales like the big guys. I for one would not be surprised to see ROHOS still going strong in 5+ years.

You've hit it right on the head. ROHOS is not aiming at winning on short-term against the monsters but long-term. Within 3 years or even 2 I wouldn't be surprised to see more people playing ROHOS than BF3 or MW3 since the support for gamers is there on ROHOS and lacking on the other two.
