Damn you guys are making me all weepy, you had me at "lan"!
The problem is back then most of the staff gave a shit n stuff, but not today. There no longer hungry, id would probably just funk it up again. All they would do is add more mapping than anyone else to cause a shitstorm ego boost for the guy with the little lamborghini. |

I tried using the mouse for DOOM and Wolf3D, but it didn't work because it wasn't 360 degrees like Quake and newer. Geez, we're old. My favorite BBS was having a lan party, and I saw 3D acceleration for the first time. THAT was my 'jaw on the floor' moment.
640x480 at 30+ fps. It was mind blowing. Everyone huddled around the one computer with a voodoo and just stared at the awesomeness. "You can't even see the pixels!" - I remember people saying that like it was yesterday (texture dithering).
-scheherazade Totally. I bought the original Diamond Monster 3D card as my first 3D card for Quake. Amazing. I remember at my college's LAN parties, we had projectors, dual CPU servers, etc. FUN TIMES! I miss them. |

If it does this, I will walk to Texas and kiss Carmack's shoes. I love how people today call quake 'fast'.
When it came out, we were all griping about how 'slow' it was compared to doom.
Goes to show you what's happened with games in general. Everything crawls.
I was rather happy about doom3's MP, since you could bunny hop really fast. Although so few people realized this that people that knew how to were initially kicked for cheating...

The reasons for "disjointed and incoherent" would be that id didn't make their games to tell a story back then but that they made the game first (or a series of cool levels) and then at the very last minute they slapped a story on the whole thing. That's why id games never had much of a story to begin with. Doom was coherent. Sure, the story was solely a .txt, but it had coherency. Quake lacked it entirely.
Quake indeed had a quite complex story based on a D&D campaign that Romero and Carmack were playing, but it was later scraped in favor of "just doing Doom 3" (as put in "Masters of Doom"). I recalled "All Your History" documentaries (http://www.youtube.com/show/allyourhistory?s=3 ) mentioning this too that made id Software employee (John Romero) depart?

| Story in gaming is a waste of time. Games today are all story. Hundreds of millions spent on story. With gameplay that's slow and on autopilot requiring less and less input. |

Quake + gamepads = not Quake. I remember reading that Carmack regretted for not developing Rage mainly for PC and then later adapting it to consoles. Maybe for the next developments they end up doing the Right Thing(tm) after all. |

Turns out that like Call of Duty the game has a mechanic on a gamepad where when you hit the aim button it auto-locks to the nearest enemy, removing the need to really aim at all. Using this mechanic (and turning it off on PC) might make real fast-paced shooters more common in modern times. I'm thinking more along the lines of Quake multiplayer. Even console shooters don't have iron sights snapping in multiplayer. Quake MP was all about really fast player movement as well. Strafe-jumping and rocket-jumping, to be specific. If a new Quake is made, they'll definitely slow things down to accommodate for gamepads. |

I spoke with Willits at QuakeCon 2006 about Quake1, which is by far and wide my favorite Quake game. IIRC he said he cleaned/polished up a lot of the levels by Romero and others too.
For me, Quakeworld was more 28.8 modem friendly, but the original Quake (aka 'netquake') offers a much better and more solid gameplay, especially since we now all have broadband. No rubber banding, no insta-kills from 300 ping players, etc.. Quakeworld played, and still does, play like shit. Netquake is what I hope they copy, but I realize it's an entirely different era in gaming and they'll probably bring over the the theme and perhaps little of the original gameplay and none of the code (it's GPL'd anyway). I suspect that they'd use an updated Rage engine.
For me, Quake2 multiplayer was a big disappointment. Q2 copied the Quakeworld net-code and the MP gameplay suffered greatly. Sure Q2 SP was fine and fun, and even the MP was wildly popular, but I hated it. Even the Q2 theme was somewhat generic.
I have low expectations. A Quake1 sequel designed for a gamepad - that's against my religion. I'd like to be hopeful though so I won't judge until I see/play it.

Yeah...the grappling hook was awesome...I liked grappling in the upper corner of the capture room then switching to the rocket launcher and wait for enemies. They soon figured out where I was and rail me if I stayed put, but the key is to move around and hang in a different place each time. Grapple hook was especially handy for the two towers map (I think it was called two towers) because a skilled flag carrier could grapple all the way from the enemy capture area to the home capture point with the flag without touching the ground...nearly eliminating any splash damage and providing a challenge to all other weapons fire.
Do you remember the Lithium mod for Quake? Runes were added that provided a temporary boost of speed, damage, damage resistance, and the 4th I think invisibility. It was the first introduction of what we now call power-ups...which were a main-stay of Quake 3 Arena especially CTF.
I remember that CTF was such a popular mod that when it was released the deathmatch servers shrank from 100% full servers to less than 10% half-full with almost everyone in the CTF servers on nearly every service. Of course that only lasted for a few months until Team Fortress was introduced, but even then there were at least 25% CTF servers still running while TF servers were like 70%. Most clans still competed in CTF as well as TF. Of course threewave CTF really improved the game by restricting weapons and ammo instead of everyone having all weapons and lots of ammo to start.
We will never have that experience again, but if Quake would go back to the basic FPS for multiplayer then perhaps the free-for-all deathmatches as well as threewave-style CTF would rule again. |

You are constantly being swarmed and surrounded by enemies pretty much like the old days of Quake and Serious Sam. I wondered how the hell consoles could handle that with those analog pads.
