Frozen Synapse Soundtrack

The Frozen Synapse Website now offers online sales of the full soundtrack for Frozen Synapse (thanks Morris). They provide a sample, and the following explanation of the implications of buying it from them rather than elsewhere:

(PLEASE NOTE - Other distributors (such as Valve) may choose to offer the soundtrack at a lower price if you have already purchased the full game outside of a Soundtrack Edition bundle. If you are in this position, but would like to support Mode 7 and nervous_testpilot further, you are welcome to choose to pay more and buy direct from us. This will encourage the creation of more music and other ambitious indie game soundtracks! However, please also feel free to shop around.)

My main wish for this game: A GUI window that lists every active order and special state all of your squad elements is currently following that I can overview before hitting the commit turn button. This is because I keep forgetting to unset that one guy I forgot about from focus mode and he ends up waddling ass forwards into the fray, giving a very literal meaning to the phrase "Getting your ass shot off", just about makes me face palm every time it happens.

Other than this bit, I love this game, been waiting a long time for something like it to come along.

Why don't you two go in together then? There are posts on both the Steam and official forums for gifting/selling the extra copy. I'm waiting for a reply from a friend if he wants to go in together, otherwise I'm going to post here and/or the other forums to find a home for the extra one.

Actually talking with another member of the board about this. He bought it, and I'm willing to trade a gifted ~$15 Steam game for that license.

I'm going to pick this up from the developer's site. I don't mind the 2 copy deal, think of it as buy one get one free.

The game looks great, but forcing the 2-pack is making me iffy right now. I don't really have anyone in my friend's list who is into TBS games.

If they were selling it solo for $15, I'd have already bought it. $25 for effectively a wasted copy is pushing it... Wish Steam had some sort of "split the cost" feature.

This is what I kept complaining about. Even if it was $20 for 1, $25 for 2 I'd have felt better about it.

This game is pure awesome, a must for any strategy fan. This is one of those rare games every PC gamer should own.

+1

I haven't had a chance to play it in a few days, and it's driving me nuts. This game is a true gem. The only slight drawback is that their server simply couldn't keep up, so they broke up the servers individually to handle the load. While stats are global, the games remain locked to a specific server. I believe they're working on fixing this (and making everything global) but it hasn't happened yet.

Edit: It appears they're well on the way to sorting this out. http://www.mode7games.com/blog/

Few questions though, if I buy the game + soundtrack bundle direct from their site, does the game use Steam or is it stand alone. If I wanted to play with someone else that is at my house, does it have an offline LAN mode (or even a hotseat mode) or will I need the two copies/steam accounts?

The game does not need Steam, though you get a code at purchase (even at Mode 7) that makes it able to add your game to Steam.

There's an offline mode, but it's purely the SP campaign, no hotseat or lan, since all turns go over the central server. However, when you purchase it, you get a 2nd one free.

One feature of the game that often goes unnoticed is how great the multiplayer and lobby system actually is. You can have multiple games going on at the same time, and because all turns are processed and stored at the server, you can asynchronically submit turns.

So if both people are online, you can play turns simultaneously, or if not, you can play it like a PBEM game without the hassle. And it makes game replays available, so you can replay games your friends played.

I already had this in my wish list, but after watching that video I want it now. I gotta wait until after the weekend though, I have to take my computer down to put in a new desk and re-arrange some furniture.

From the website:

What you get with EVERY purchase:

1. A FREE full copy of the game for a friend

2. A free key to activate on Steam if you so desire - please note, Steam is not required to run the game

3. Choice of PC or Mac version

So basically, if you buy it directly from them, you CAN register it on Steam if you want to. A purchase automatically comes with two copies, but there is no LAN. But that's not really a problem the way the game is played, as long as both computers have access to the internet.

Yes, simulation is actually completely core to the gameplay. It's not really an option to play the game without running simulations, as you will die constantly from unexpected sources. But because it's such an integral part of the design, it's all good (not to mention close to unique -- you almost certainly haven't played a game like this before).

I thoroughly recommend watching the first impressions video made by Total Biscuit, as he really impresses upon you just how fun and engaging this feature is.

Then try the demo when it comes out to find out for yourself. But do watch the video first -- nothing else I'd seen had actually made me understand how important the the simulation aspect was.

I've all but completed the single player campaign now, and it pretty much rocks. I haven't even had a multiplayer game yet, and it's already been well worth the money.

Hmm, not sure of how I feel about being able to simulate turns.

This is actually one of the best parts of the game! Not only can you simulate what your commands are, you can simulate what you THINK the AI or real opponent will do with their characters. So if you're smart and guess what they're going to do, you'll do much better. But as one reviewer said, "I know what the smartest thing for him to do is, and I know how to counter it. But is he actually that smart? And is he so smart he knows I know hes smart?

They ARE working on a demo, which should really help them out. There's a lot of people playing online already, though.

This game is awesome. You should definitely get it if you like turn-based strategy, strategy, or chess with guns.

Tons of great reviews on it... 5/5 Escapist, 89 PC Gamer, 95 bitgamer, etc. Here's a good video that shows the gameplay:

Skip to like 5 minutes if you want to dig right into the gameplay. 21 minutes goes into a replay of multiplayer.
