2K Games announces the North American release of Duke Nukem Forever, the first-person shooter with one of the longest (if not the longest, period) development cycles in videogame history. The game was released in Europe last week, is now on North American store shelves, and can also be had through the magic of digital distribution from Direct2Drive, GamersGate (save 10%), Green Man Gaming (save 27%), and Steam, and is also available for 20% off through Woot with the code "EMCKDJF85" (thanks nin). According to their possibly biased assessment, the saga behind the game's creation is a story of heroes and legends: From the game’s inception, the legendary George Broussard and his team of immensely talented and passionate designers, artists and programmers at 3DRealms devoted themselves to bringing Duke Nukem Forever to market. When all appeared lost, a small team of dedicated developers, known as Triptych Studios, saved Duke Nukem Forever from what seemed like vaporware death and resurrected the King. Their heroic efforts alongside Gearbox Software, Piranha Games and many other contributors finalized the legacy by bringing the full-featured triple-A title to retail.
Apologizing to no one, Duke Nukem Forever is the high-octane video game equivalent of a Hollywood summer blockbuster. Starring the legendary lady killer and alien slayer, Duke Nukem Forever introduces gamers to a blastastic time filled with head-popping, bone-rattling action, brazenly crude humor, impossibly statuesque women dying for affection, and catchy one-liners that will have you laughing out loud.

I remember reading one of the ex-devs frustrated rants on gamasutra about how they had to continually scrap and rework their efforts all the time. It was like being in crunch all year and nothing was actually getting accomplished. And you know what? I lay it entirely on the heads of 3dr such as George. If he had shown actual leadership and stopped reworking the engine and had realistic goals instead of trying to have every single feature every new game that came out with had, they woulda had something years ago. And this game coming out 5 or 10 years ago might have impressed people.
This is why Gabe Newell is starting to scare me about valve with all the things he's been saying recently. He sets the entire tone of the company. Hes saying they mostly only work on things interesting to them (which is why TF2 has all those hats and stuff, the devs think its "interesting" to play with the game mechanics in that way). That they are entering 3 big new markets (mobile, social, and games as a service which I read as MMO). They can't possibly maintain focus on PC games when they have only 250 employees and they want to do all that and steam too. The employees are free to switch between projects at any time. It sounds like he's a super nice boss to work for, but I think they need a bit more leadership.
He was talking about the development of HL2, apparently the crunch time on that scared him, so thats why he went to episodic models so he could have less crunch time on projects. That hasn't turned out well, so I'm wondering if they will ever release anything in the HL universe again. Especially since he said portal 2 was last isolated single player experience game they were going to work on. |
