Kotick Buying Myspace?

An investor group involving Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is working on a deal to buy a controlling interest in Myspace, the struggling social networking site currently owned by Rupert Murdock's News Corp, reports Reuters, citing "a source familiar with the matter." Word is Kotick's group is the leading candidate for a sale, which will likely be for under $100 million, in spite of the site's $580 million price tag back in 2005. According to their source: "Kotick's involvement is personal and nothing to do with Activision at this stage." Thanks The Grifter.

After being snubbed by EA during their E3 preview of Battlefield 3 (hilarious), Kotick was reported as saying, "I don't need you guys! I can buy new friends!"

And so, he is purchasing MySpace.

Ok. I loled.

Hey now. That's an insult to people who "bought the farm" intentionally.

Well gimps like him need a network of spammers, scammers, and 48yr old virgins pretending to be 16yr olds.

I mean how else is he supposed to drive himself into the ground?

I don't need to be a financial adviser to know that this is a really bad investment. They'd be better off buying into (subprime) mortgage backed securities. Myspace is worth squat, and in the future it is more than likely to be worth less than squat.

which will likely be for under $100 million

Better be an order of magnitude under $100 million.

Honestly, there is upside to MySpace... the problem is whether or not it's passed its ability to do anything with that. Trying to mimic Facebook was a terrible strategy for them, but there is still enough brand recognition to it to allow it to compete with ventures like Bandcamp for independent media with social features secondary.

Basically, they need to stop pretending they're Facebook and focus on dealing with musicians, artists, performers, and filmmakers. If they can do that, Kotick might (once again) be laughing all the way to the bank. Whatever I might happen to think about his style, betting against him isn't usually a good idea.

Kotick has a ton of extra money if he's got so much sloshing around he thinks nothing of dropping $100 mil to pickup myspace. Activision sure has been good for him.

(and yes, I know its part of a group, but he's still got a ton sloshing around if he wants to do that)
