"It's interesting when you look at our technology licensing -- it was never really a business that I wanted to be in," he said. "In the very early days, people would pester us, and we'd just throw out some ridiculous terms, and we were surprised when people started taking us up on it."
"I didn't want to be in the process of supporting a lot of outside teams, because you feel beholden to not make radical changes when it's going to pull the rug out from lots of other people," he explained. "When it's your own team, you can make the sensible decision that [a big change] is going to be worth it, that it's going to suck for a while, but we make our way through it. But you don't want to do that to other people."

I really need to dig up all the interviews about how they were gung-ho about supporting dev's using their engines.

also anyone who knows anything about modding id tech games can simply open up the MW2 directory and see Id's hall marks all over the structure and format of the install.

The only way anyone responds to my posts is if they are outrageous and black and white.

This.
After Q3 I really thought id should stop making games and just make engines and lic them to other people to make the game.
Why? Rage looks good.

Wasn't building engines all id was actually good at?
AnointedSword wrote on Jun 9, 2011, 01:27:Its "id" not "ID".
Now they can focus on the strong point of their games, gameplay (lol). I will say something that I mean from the bottom of my heart. When Romero left ID, a part of ID went missing. We can all say how bad Romero did once he left Id, but to be honest with you, how well did ID do? I also thought the gameplay and the imagination went missing from Id's stuff after Romero left. Just my two cents...just wondering where ID would be if they were all still together? oO

very single Call of Duty game (and I guarantee you including Modern Warfare 3) runs on the Quake 3 engine.
wrong. they stopped using id tech since COD2. modern warfare is using proprietary engine.

ID never learned to make a game other then a shoot a monster and shoot a player. Even CTF had to be added by a mod. Now people think they stink becuase their games are 15 years old when new. Carmack is a fossil.

Parallax Abstraction wrote on Jun 8, 2011, 22:19:That depends on the terms of the deal. From the engine deals I've seen offered from other engines, you can opt to pay a large lump sum up front then owe no royalties.
but the credits of that game still say Portions of this Software (c) id Software, Inc. which means they are still making residuals off that license.
