id Happy to be Done with Engine Licensing

Gamasutra quotes id Software's John Carmack and Tim Willits talking about their happiness at no longer being in the engine licensing business since being purchased by Zenimax. According to Carmack, this is not a business he ever was fond of in the first place:
"It's interesting when you look at our technology licensing -- it was never really a business that I wanted to be in," he said. "In the very early days, people would pester us, and we'd just throw out some ridiculous terms, and we were surprised when people started taking us up on it."

"I didn't want to be in the process of supporting a lot of outside teams, because you feel beholden to not make radical changes when it's going to pull the rug out from lots of other people," he explained. "When it's your own team, you can make the sensible decision that [a big change] is going to be worth it, that it's going to suck for a while, but we make our way through it. But you don't want to do that to other people."

John Carmack is a cocky little man who should be choked from behind until he taps out.

Like the time he made Jason Hall tap out?

I really need to dig up all the interviews about how they were gung-ho about supporting dev's using their engines.

There's a big difference between Carmack being enthused about it and the business owners at id being enthused about it.

Unless it was the same person saying those things, I don't think it's fair to view it as double-speak.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IW_engine

The engine is based on id Tech 3, which was used on the first Call of Duty game.

Also, Valve's Source engine is based on id Tech (everything from HL1 to Portal 2). To say that id tech hasn't been used much since 2000 is just flat out wrong. I'd argue that even though the Unreal engine has been used more, the id tech engines have been used to greater success.

also anyone who knows anything about modding id tech games can simply open up the MW2 directory and see Id's hall marks all over the structure and format of the install.

what i remember from the 2005 interview on pcgamer is that IW kept legacy id tech for the multiplayer part to make it easy for moders. thats why you will see the directory layout similar to id tech. the graphics engine is internal proprietary. wish i kept the magazine so that i can scan and upload the pages. i cant find a reference online.

John Carmack is a cocky little man who should be choked from behind until he taps out. What a pain in the ass it must be for him to have to figure out how to spend all the money he made from licensing those game engines. Poor guy.

not only that, everyone makes out like doom3 was terrible; funny i dont remember it that way. It might not have been amazing, but it was more than solid it was a "good" if not "great" game.

Their last game was a massive success, as was every game before that they made. Not sure what else you can ask for from a developer.

id < EPIC when it comes to 3rd party engine building.

EPIC 2010 >is< the id of 2000.

Although ultimately I still believe id > everything else.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/796/796451p2.html

Its bullshit (well kind off); it is a enhanced version of the Q3 tech they called a "new engine" (IW engine) for marketing purposes (however that might be unfair they KEEP layering new functionality in it, mainly based on rendering and texture streaming). It has lots of tech intigrated that does not originate from Id tech 3, but the basics of it still are found in tech3. Fire up any MW game - you will see ID tech listed in the credits.[now waiting for someone to send the wiki pedia article that supports that i am wrong, unfortunatly the article is not correct].

also anyone who knows anything about modding id tech games can simply open up the MW2 directory and see Id's hall marks all over the structure and format of the install.

BTW looks like the eikipedia article got updated sometime - now referances taht IW engine is based on id tech. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IW_engine

Post 1 really says it best.

I remember Carmack saying he had "one good new engine left in him" and there was lots of hype about that, including at an Apple keynote with Jobs himself on stage -- and then nothing.

The best part of any technology anywhere is the first time you get that thrill of use. id did that well. They could have kept going if they hadn't split the original founders. I think that's true anywhere.

wrong. they stopped using id tech since COD2. modern warfare is using proprietary engine.

The information gets a bit dicey at this point with such an old engine but they did use iD Tech 3 in nearly all of their CoD titles up until MW2. However, according to this article, it implies that they have gone another route with MW3 which may or may not be based on iD Tech 3.

That depends on the terms of the deal. From the engine deals I've seen offered from other engines, you can opt to pay a large lump sum up front then owe no royalties.
