id on RAGE PC Controls

PC Gamer has word from id's Tim Willits on RAGE controls, stressing the game's PC support allows the player to carry more weapons than, say, Duke Nukem:
Rage doesn’t follow the trend for letting you only carry two weapons at once. Instead, you can carry all your weapons at all times, and they’re mapped to the traditional number keys. “We were kind of back and forth on whether we keep to four buttons that you map to your favourites,” explained Willits. “But on the PC you’ve got a key for every weapon. And we follow the Half-Life control paradigm, where you can press the button twice to select the weapon.”

Quite. What the hell is Tim talking about? (or should that be "What'chu talkin' 'bout, Willits?")

Every weapon has its own key, but you have to press it twice? Why? Why not once, like every other game you've made? What the hell kind of scheme is this?

Time will tell just how PC friendly Rage will be, otherwise there will be a lot of raging about Rage.

Oh thank God. Yay.

All I'm worried about now is the hideous auto-aim, and hopefully that can be turned off too.

Rage is definitely back on my list now.

The COMPETITIVE MULTI component of the game is the "Rage Combat Rally" which is essentially 8 people in buggies blowing the shit out of each other. No, it is not FPS Deathmatch, but it is still competitive multi.

I'm wondering whether you'll be able to get out of your vehicle or not in this mode. Have they elaborated on that?

In another thread about Rage people bitched and moaned about how the game won't let the player carry more than 2 weapons and weapon switching won't be possible via number keys.

Now id announces it and people are bitching and moaning that they can't rebind keys (which they might even be able to do).

In a few weeks id will announce the ability to rebind keys via a text file and people will bitch and moan that the font of that text file is Verdana instead of Courier New.

YES! Thanks, iD. I'm glad they're paying attention to the details when it comes to the PC version.

Yes. It does. While it may not be your cup of tea. There are those of us out there who enjoy the auto combat genre. I have forever been a big fan of Carmageddon, Twisted Metal and Interstate '76 is at the top of my list when it comes to favorite games ever. Theres 50 other competitive FPS games out there. If they want to do auto combat multi, I totally dig it.

Good to see this getting settled. Let's move on to something else to bitch about.

No dedicated servers for RAGE? I haven't read if that's true or not.

There is no competitive multi, it is co-op only.

Absolutely wrong. FFS. Have you even read an article about Rage?

These low player limits in MP is just sad. We had several times this many in the mid 1990's over a freaking 56K (or less) modem!

I really miss the days of QuakeWorld/Quake2 multiplayer. Sure dial up sucked but it still worked good enough and the matches were just crazy.

I can't agree unfortunately. As someone who was a huge fan of playing Doom, Doom 2 and Duke3D over BBS's back in the early 90's. I prefered the small intimate 4-8 player matches. 64 Players is fine for something as large scale as Battlefield 3, or 32 for something medium scale like Bad Company 2. But I've personally always felt 16 Player for 8 v 8 Team games was ideal, and anything more than 8 for straight deathmatch is just too much chaos and no longer about skill.

So, press button twice to select weapon, then press the cycle ammo button up to 3 times to select ammo? Or would the half-life control scheme take care of ammo selection as well? I can't remember exactly how it worked.
HL stacked some weapons so you hit say 3 then a menu of weapons showed up and you hit 3 till you got to the one you wanted then pressed the fire button to select.

Or you do what I (and I think everyone else did) turned fast user switching on and just used the mouse wheel.

It will be another lost cause game if they don’t allow us to remap those keys. Just look at the rage over DS3 that going on now over the lack of remapping keys. That should be a prime example of what not to do to your customers.

This should be crossposted to the Dungeon Siege thread of an example of how to properly handle choice.

id clearly doesn't know what they're doing. They should be creating one master control system and intentionally hampering all the rest of them to ensure that everyone has to play the game the way they want them to.

That's the way REAL developers like Obsidian handle things these days. THEY dictate how a player should enjoy their game, not the other way around.

Apparently gone are the days of games like Quake where you can rebind whateverthefuck you want with a simple text file. So things like this are actually news.

Oh wait its the same way with dedicated servers, let alone USER RUN dedicated servers, and mod tools, and free demos on all platforms before launch, and the ability to turn off mouse acceleration, and support for 16:10 monitors, and ...

I'll be happy as long as I can remap all my weapon keys. Can't think of a reason why they wouldn't allow that, but DS3 doesn't let you remap keys, so who knows.
