Steam launched years ago and was a steam-ing pile of crap, but it's shaped up since then and is a great content delivery service. You are forgetting 2 things a) this is EA we are talking about b) this isn't the first content delivery system EA has done. They've done the whole EA download manager thing that delivers digital content purchased from the EA store. Many of us have had experience with at least one item purchased from EA store when they run a sale. And its often been a BAD past experience with EA's content delivery system. I think the only thing thats been improved is that now they let you re-download stuff. Early on they charged you a fee to re-download anything after 6 months, or you could pay an extra "download insurance fee". I'm pretty sure they've done away with that, correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, its not decent company (such as valve at the time) launching a new content delivery. Its EA launching yet another content delivery, and they have a history both as a non-decent company and with a non-decent content delivery system. |

Creston To be fair, their MMOs have had pretty reliable connectivity. At least as reliable as WOW anyway. There's a big difference when your game has dedicated infrastructure vs. being forced onto the DRM servers for the unwashed masses. |

However, even though you'll only be able to buy and download The Old Republic digitally via Origin, you will still be able to buy a retail, boxed copy of the game from your favorite retailer (and that includes online retailers who’ll ship the box to you). BioWare and EA know the value many gamers place on a cool boxed product... and we’re producing a cool boxed product. (Or maybe I should say 'boxed products'. ) I'll wait for you to read it. |

There is no 'boxed' copy according to everything. Digital only, no retail. Enjoy! Wrong, retail boxed copy and deluxe version both confirmed on the TOR website. They are doing exactly the same thing as Blizzard and Cataclysm certainly sold just fine. |

Of course, both Steam and GFWL try to integrate their software to boxed games as often as they can. And it's not as if you can buy Valve games on D2D or GOG. In principle, they're not doing anything worse than what we're used to. But I didn't like having Steam or GFWL shoved down my throat either. |

Maybe EA is greedy, or maybe this is simply their way of standardizing their content delivery, multiplayer and account management backends, anti-piracy, merchandise sales, etc, etc, into a single platform. I'm shocked, shocked, that gamers of all people, somewhat tech-savvy folks in general, aren't going at this with at LEAST an open mind. So many folks here will laud Steam and decry Origin, but forget exactly how Valve's service launched way back in the day. Or they'll be the types who are A-OK with Apple's iron grip on their App Store, or will slobber all over Notch's knob despite Minecraft's single-point-sales scheme, but will dump on Origin... geez people. EA has a pretty good reputation for 'shitting' things up. And the better something was, the shitter it becomes unless they make it themselves. Then it's Mt. Shitmore, which erupts spewing crap everywhere.
EA is late to the game, and unless your distribution system is going to bring something unique to the game people will simply refuse it. GOG's claim? DRM free(So stupid a monkey can do it). Steams claim? Buy it, play it on your account anywhere(etc)(but we can ban you, and screw you out of all your shit!). Why should people be willing to even touch a new system by a company that they already know makes shit?
And I'll bet that most people here don't have apple related crap. Rather they use something android based, or have hardhacked or softhacked their phone, saying screw-you to both.
And minecraft? I never could see a point to that, let alone the hype.

You all can see what’s coming next. EA will be making it so that their own online store will be the only place you can buy EA games. A Pirating we will go, YARR!!! They don't care about pirates, they care about those paying customers. Pirate all you want, the paying customers will be the ones who feel the pain...because EA cares so so much. |
