Volition's New IP

During a conversation with Volition's David Abzug, VideoGamer.com learned from the lead designer on Red Faction: Armageddon that the developer is working on a new game based on a new intellectual property in addition to their upcoming collaboration with director Guillermo del Toro on inSANE. "There are, but I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about them," he said when asked about new IPs. A follow-up answer about the first-person shooter genre suggests the new game will not be an FPS: "I would like to return to it with another IP, yeah." He elaborates, suggesting this will be a third-person game: "First-person and third-person are just two different ways of making it. There are things that first-person does better, there are things that third-person does better. Third-person gives you more situational awareness, first-person makes you feel more involved in the action. Third-person lets you see your character more, first-person gives you a more claustrophobic view - it's better for a military shooter." Thanks VG247.

Seems to me like Volitions always making mediocre shooters with some sort of fantastic tech gimmick.

I think the first one's only wooing charm was the destroyable levels. maybe a 6/10 as a whole game though.

Guillermo Del Toro is a a pretty stellar film director though.

Red Faction Guerrilla

Wasn't into it. Didn't play too long, but it just felt like you ran into an area, ran through it, saw building collapse in cool but predictable ways, shot some guys, then ran out. I felt no real strategy behind it. Combat felt only slightly better than the first Just Cause, in that bullets were flying from everywhere without a good sense of anything coherent or worthwhile going on or any reason for urgency.

Red Faction Guerrilla (while a mess on PC I admit) was one of the most fun shooters in years for me. It actually (GASP!) tried to do something new! The Saint's Row series is a blast too. The previous Red Faction games...yeah they weren't so hot.

Jesus, all these guys are good for is mediocre shooters. And del Toro can fuck right off!

While I agree with the first sentence, what's with the second?
He's a great director who can actually do horror. Few horror games anymore unnerve me. I think the genre could benefit from this.

And yes, f them in the a for not doing another freespace-style game(about the only reason I still have a joystick).

First person only gives you a claustrophobic view if you're constrained to controller movement and 50 degree FOVs.

How about a space game called SpeeFrace? It's kinda like X-Wing, only better, with these huge cap ships and the evil Fhevans.

Don't forget the Lammer of Hight!
