THQ Signs Turtle Rock

THQ announces they have signed on to publish the next title from Turtle Rock Studios, developers of the original Left 4 Dead who were briefly known as Valve South. Details are sparse, but word is the new game will be an ambitious first-person shooter. "We’re thrilled to be working with THQ," said Phil Robb, COO, Turtle Rock Studios. "This project is the most ambitious thing we’ve ever attempted, and we’re inspired by the support THQ has shown to help us realize that vision. We’re going to take the first person shooter experience to a whole new level, and we can’t wait to show the game for the first time in the months ahead."

Didn't know people left Valve, voluntarily.

Kim Swift, to name one, did it a couple years ago.

Why would they back them financially if they left the nest? Makes no sense.

Microsoft owns a huge chunk of Apple. Good investments make money

Some people just don't like working in big groups either. With a smaller company you can narrow your product focus, less overhead, no cliques, hopefully little conflict and more communication.

To retain equity in the company and generate profits from their projects. This happens in many industries all the time. You give the company some seed money to get started and keep like a 30% stake so that as long as they keep making money, you keep making money, often many times your original investment. But that said, the guys from Turtle Rock likely made (and are probably still making) so much off sales from Left 4 Dead that they might just be bankrolling themselves.

I'm guessing Valve has a stake in the company, too, and will likely have some creative input (but not control), even if the input is just voluntarily given and received.

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

Creston how do you figure that? Was it the total unoriginality of Left 4 Dead that gave it away? Sheesh, some people like to spew shit just for the sake of spewing shit.

Interesting that Turtle Rock has become their own thing again. I wonder if Valve is still backing them financially or if they just gave the name back to the owners.
