Trading one monopoly for another is the worst sort of competition. 'Community broadband' is monopolistic and anti-competitive and will also hurt Internet investment.
But please don't blame the crashed economy due to failed central economic planning by the Fed. Bubble economics from artificially low interest rates, bailouts and politically motivated stimulus spending take away from investment in things like broadband investments. These are more likely the real causes of our falling behind other countries. That, and the duopoly which curtails competition as well.
The FCC will continue to spit out propaganda like this so they can expand their authority across the Internet. Problem, reaction, solution.
We were already lagging behind...for the same reason I mentioned...BEFORE the economy took a dump.
Towns have tried to roll fiber to the home because the ISPs refuse to do so and get sued for it. The ISPs seem to want slow final mile so that they can blame network congestion for their shaping and usage policies. AKA, they make more money without spending anything on infrastructure. The ISPs refuse to do so because they have no competition to push them forward. |
