Out of the Blue

I'm happy I held off on returning my birdfeeder, as it turns out I jumped the gun a bit in deciding it was bird-proof. Just a couple of days after drawing that hasty conclusion, the feeder started attracting more and more birds, and at this point it has turned into the avian hotspot that the previous feeder was. It has also continued to be squirrel-proof, as I have watched dozens of attempts on the birdseed by rodents, none of which were even remotely successful. The squirrels seem resigned to dining of scraps that fall to the ground... for now at least. I'm not declaring victory just yet after seeing the resourcefulness of the squirrels in action, but it's a good start.

Conducting experiments with a result already in mind typically leads to the desired result being found, regardless of the actual data involved. This not only applies to studies of the effects of video game violence, but to the hunts for 'dark matter' and 'dark energy'. Steven Covey called it 'beginning with the end in mind' in his book 'Seven Habits of Highly Successful People'.
