Hellgate's North American F2P Return

T3 Entertainment, Redbana, and HanbitSoft announce plans to bring Hellgate back to North America, reviving Hellgate: London, the action/RPG that sank its developer Flagship Studios back in 2008. The game is now a free-to-play MMORPG to launch later this year, and they expect to have their first closed beta test from June 3 to June 5. A new Hellgate Global Website is online and the game's YouTube channel has a few trailers. Here's word on what to expect:

Players are invited to return to Hellgate this June to fight for the survival of the human race. Join a party online to fight against evil with a team or play solo if you’re brave enough. Choose your character from six different unique class types and prepare for battle against creatures from hell. Arm yourself with a wide variety of weapons and armor and dismantle the ones you don’t need to obtain rare scrap metals. Enhance your weapons with upgrades and relics to have the best chance of survival.

When Hellgate returns, you better be ready.

The whole "Hellgate is an MMO!" debacle made me hate Bill Roper. Get me all excited about a First Person Diablo then pull the rug out from under me by monetizing every aspect and calling it an MMO. Someone should be pistol-whipped I tell ya!

Now that idiot boy Roper is out of the picture, this may be worth checking out. Extremely wary of the potential for microtransaction hell though.

My family had a lot of fun with this game. I played through it twice. I have considered the idea of playing it from time to time. I will probably check out the new server. Loved the guardian class.

I remember trying this game and it didn't have functional text chat. Seriously.

Played the original beta back in October of 2007. You know what was funny? Most of the bugs they killed in the beta CAME BACK IN THE RETAIL GAME...and they weren't patched out until a month later. This game was a comedy of errors, except for the poor sods that bought a lifetime sub.

I actually did pay for one month just to see what you got. You were given nothing but apple cider, potatoes and a lv11 flaming gauntlet. That's it. What's worse is the flaming gauntlet was dropping like crazy and every douche nozzle in the game was wearing one.

The engine ran like crap, the game frequently crashed, online play was abysmal due to lag and the bugs (such as disappearing models making your teammates invisible to everyone but them) made it nearly unplayable online.

Even if they fixed everything they can't fix the fact that the game just plain sucked. It was a poor man's 3D Diablo, that's it. Nothing more.

I actually have a picture somewhere on my laptop of Bill Roper dressed as a whore.

The entire game is a series of half baked features, why do properties like this even get revived at all when so many good ones don't get a second chance?
Because they think they can monetize the fuck out of it with microtransactions, and given the other kinds of crap people are willing to throw their money at, it's not very far-fetched to think it might work for them.

I'm certainly willing to play this for free - it can't be any worse than it was. Right? Right?
I'd rather buy an actual game and have fun than spend money to support their fucked up business model.

I played the beta and sorta enjoyed that, except for all the bugs.

The only reason why I ever bought that game in its release, was because Bill Roper's name was attached to it. Boy was I ever let down. The CD is long shattered and gone to trash land, good riddance. The repeat level design was so discouraging, but still had some mild potential. But the identical level design and scripted mob spawns was just ... I prefer to play Freecell.

Prepare to be disappointed, it looked terrible when it launched and played like repetitive shit. We told them in beta repeatedly that there wasn't much of an actual game there but they didn't want to listen. The entire game is a series of half baked features, why do properties like this even get revived at all when so many good ones don't get a second chance?

I'm actually looking forward to playing it again. Of course it depends on how much has gone in to the microtransaction part. If I have to pay to use skills, screw that.

It will be interesting to see what they have changed in the game and how they fixed all the repetitiveness that made the original so bad. The game would have been so much better had they not screwed everyone over for their pay model and all the rehashing you did.

This game had one of the best cinematic trailers I've ever seen, yet it wasn't actually released with the game so almost nobody saw it. Just one decision involved with this game among many that left me banging my head against the wall.

"Enhance your weapons with upgrades and relics to have the best chance of survival." is suspect in any "free-to-play" model. And seeing how well they screwed some people in the recent past, I wouldn't expect too much here...

Yeah, sounds like they're just trying to wring cash out of it through micro-transactions. If that's the case and they haven't fixed the game, then I hope it flops like a dead fish.

I really, really hoped that this title would live up to the hype it generated over the years. While the game itself was by no means bad, Flagship Studios handled it in such a disastrous way which really tarnished the title along with the credibility of several members within it.

I hope that within this closed beta that they will actually iron out bugs rather than to rush it in to a live setting as was done before but with only two days, I suspect it's more of along the lines of 'lets see if this sunk ship can float again'.
