They don't have to price compete on new, since nobody does that. They just have to price compete on used. And their big advantage on competing on used is that they've already MADE all their money on the sale of the new game.
There is no incentive to buy new if the manufacturers themselves sell used. It instantly devalues the product and will effectively start a price war on every single product released. Good for the consumer, bad for the industry as a whole, not just the greedy parts that you complain too. Any incentives they could offer will be demanded by retail which they will need to give them in order to survive because retail is where they make money right now and for the foreseeable future. There's a reason Microsoft prices all of the Xbox 360 games higher than retail on it's digital store. That's without going into the complications behind creating a "used digital" product which is effectively what you're telling them to do. |
