Quote of the Day

"Piracy these days on PC is probably less problematic than second-hand sales on the Xbox," says lead Fable III combat designer Mike West. "I've been working on PC games for many years and piracy is always a problem. There are a lot of honest people out there as well, and if they like your game they'll buy it." Thanks joao.

That kind of turns into a chicken and the egg situation. What was there first, crippling piracy, or DRM? I was getting DRM on games as far back as I can remember, long before I even realized there was such a thing as piracy.

I miss the old DRM days.
Like the questions at the beginning of Leisure Suit Larry
Or X-Wing asking for the word at the bottom of page X

The old Commodore 64/128 days, I don't recall any. In fact I knew a lot of people that pirated games for that. I recall being told we technically shouldn't but it was alright. What kind of mind-frell is that for a young kid: you shouldn't do it / but it's ok.

I recall a few games with some copy protection stuff on the C64. Mostly the "answer a question from the manual" kind of thing.
And sure, I pirated stuff on the C64 too, I was like 11, the effects of piracy aren't something an 11 year old understands. I did, however, BUY quite a lot of games too. I bought the ones I really wanted, I played most of the rest through pirated copies. Nobody ever lost a sale on me, because I would have never bought the pirated games. I just played them because I could.

Any game that I really wanted, I bought.

And then came the codewheels, and all the other stuff, which were so annoying, because if you ever lost one of them, you were fucking SCREWED.

Edit :
Today we have Gamestop, a company who has built their buisness model around used game sales. They make so much profit doing this that they can now afford not to stock their shelves with "New Games" and instead request customers pre-order if they want the game on release day. If not give it 36 hours (the average length of a modern game) and you can buy it newly "used". And if it's not available at your local store you can be darn sure you'll be able to buy it online through gamestop and have it shipped across state lines to your door or the closest gamstop store.

And lets be frank it's the newly "used" game sales that are stabbing at the heart of the games industry. Companies like microsoft, sony and others spend millions of dollars marketing their product, buying air time on television, and getting the word out that "This games out, it's awsome and you really want to buy it". And for it to be available "used" just a few days after it's release hurts the developers.

That's actually a very good point, but it's one the publishers and devs have nobody to blame for but themselves. If games nowadays couldn't be finished in the time it takes for me to take a nice, solid dump, perhaps this equation to zero-day piracy wouldn't be such an issue.

But since 99% of all games are now
A) usually around 5 hours
B) offer little to no replayability, nor anything that really makes a gamer want to hold on to it

yeah, people are going to play it once, and trade it in. Maybe they should've thought about that before they decided to start putting five hours of random shovelware into a box and selling it for 60 dollars.

Oh, you made that point yourself a few paragraphs later. Heh. Embarrassed

And maybe they should, I dunno, spend a little less on marketing.
