Verno wrote on May 18, 2011, 14:21: Again though, your idea literally cannot work because that's not how the used game industry functions. Companies don't just accept used products willy-willy, they will stop accepting inventory for titles that they don't think they can sell back or give you so little money that they will profit eventually when it sells for $5 or whatever. It would be an ongoing price battle that the industry couldn't win, especially in the face of companies like Amazon, Wal-Mart and Gamestop. Everyone is doing used games now unfortunately. Which is a good point, but why does it have to be something that's followed through to the end? Right now, the publishers are getting ZERO dollars out of the used market. So if they get into it, they could at least get SOME money out of it.
And because of the advantage that they have in that they earn their investment back on the original sales (unlike the three you mentioned), they can start small and low cost in the used market and slowly grow.
They'll never eradicate the used market, but they could eventually get a decent chunk. Shit, to me, if they made a million bucks, that's exactly one million bucks more than they make now.
Of course, they'll never do it, because it's far easier to just sit there and whine about it, and because by going into the used market themselves, they are essentially saying "Okay, there is demand for used games, we accept that, we give up trying to fight it."
And seeing how that's the sensible thing to do, we can rest assured that the game industry won't figure it out until approximately 2985.
Retailers like Gamestop can afford to go lower on price than Sony who depends on retailers like Gamestop to help sell their consoles and new games too. That's exactly why the industry is so upset. The whole point here is that they have created an imbalance in what was a symbiotic relationship and the industry is now seeking workarounds. If it was as simple as opening a few used game stores or stepping up XBL Games on Demand they would have done that already. Really? You think so? This is the same industry that, until two years ago, thought that EVERYONE releasing their game in the exact same month was the most brilliant idea since powdered fucking soup. This is the industry who thinks that continuously pissing off your PAYING customers, over and over and over again, is the best way to make more money. (How's that been working out for ya, Ubi?) And these are the guys you give credit for having already taken action if they could?
Yeah, I don't share your optimism.
Not really, in fact there is a great deal of price competition on both new and used games. It just often takes place in the form of credits, special offers or DLC. I was strictly talking about new not having any competition, since used is not a widespread market (where retail is concerned. It only has a few players.) Game sells for 60 bucks at Gamestop, it sells for 60 bucks at Best Buy, it sells for 58 bucks at Walmart, it sells for 59 bucks at Amazon, etc.
And as for the bonus content, eh, they each offer something. price-wise, I don't really see much difference?
The manufacturing side of the industry can't do this with its own store place on a widespread scale because it devalues the product and will just cause prices to go lower through other sources even faster. Right, but then we're going back to used. (at least I was, I should have made that more clear. My bad.)
They don't have to price compete on new, since nobody does that. They just have to price compete on used. And their big advantage on competing on used is that they've already MADE all their money on the sale of the new game.
