No other industry I can think of spends so much time worrying about second-hand sales. If folks perceive value in your product at the price point you offer it, they will buy it. If they don't, start figuring out your value proposition, not looking for or blaming other factors.
Yeah I mean that's fair. Once I feel my value proposition has been met I'm very unlikely to ever sell a game. I think the industry would be fine if it was just people like us. Unfortunately we have people even on this site who game the system and are effectively leeches, literally boasting in almost every thread about how they got $LATEST_GAME for $1 or free, spamming forums with referral links and advertising rental sites in their sig. I can't really fault the industry for trying to screw people like that, it just bugs me that it affects me too.
I think there's a legitimate segment of the consumer market that uses resale to help drive new sales but unfortunately there's also a lot of people have no real interest in paying full price even if the game legitimately warrants it. People like to say "well you cant get mad at people for being savvy consumers" and hey thats true but you also can't get mad at the industry for being savvy either.
Book publishers deal with this, so should the game industry.
Should and will are two different things. If the book industry had a method around resale for the past one hundred years you can bet at some point they would taken it. The gaming industry is a lot different when you compare things other than the end product itself and it is a lot more adept to change in distribution. I doubt the example set by the gaming industry in terms of post-release content will be ignored either, there are examples of it in the movie industry already. |
