Then again if you have a modded system and/or drive why are you trying to connect to Xbox Live anyway?

You wouldn't. You would have 2 xboxs and swap the HD between the 2.
The legit one would be connected to LIVE and the hacked one is not.

Sounds like it would just force a firmware rollback....

Sorry but it is completely reasonable for SONY to have known that the stolen information could easily be used to hijack existing accounts thru the "password recovery" system. Completely dunderheaded of SONY.

I think that if the two were connected, we'd be hearing of a lot more instances of it than we have. These seem to be two different issues, although I've heard some people saying that the password reset URL exploit isn't anything new, which is the more troubling point to me if true.

For those of you thinking this console replacement has anything to do with the new disc format, read this:
http://majornelson.com/2011/05/18/clearing-up-some-confusion/

Clarification time! The console replacement plan that is the subject of some of today’s headlines is related to a previous update, NOT the system update that has been in public beta and will be deployed shortly.

The new disc format that is part of the beta has been rigorously tested across all Xbox 360 models and there are no known compatibility issues.

You mean Creston is spreading BS yet again!!?

Hope that clears a few things up.

Um I thought that the reason for the new disc's and update was to free up room on the disc's by using a smaller version of the DRM that is mostly on the console and less on the DVD?

Then again if you have a modded system and/or drive why are you trying to connect to Xbox Live anyway?

The new disc format is largely due to the new anti-piracy measures too, it's not really for any consumer benefit. Sure they're lifting restrictions for the video partition but that's about it. They want to push out discs and a new Dashboard version that will flash modded drives back to stock, seriously.

Actually, this story surprised me the most.

Because the new 360 disc format is incompatible with a small percentage of 360s, Microsoft is offering free replacements with their newer model.

I would've thought they would just leave it as "sucks to be you"

Yep. MS at its most confusing.

Your new console doesn't read a small portion of discs? No problem, here, have a new console!

vs.

Oh, your console keeps crashing every 2 minutes, and your graphics are all fucked up and weird? Yeah, it'll cost you 189 dollars to get that repaired. No, it's not covered under our extended warranty, because it's not an RRoD.

Regardless of what label the press uses it was a very stupid oversight, particularly when they have supposedly passed security audits to get back online. They don't need anymore headlines this close to E3 especially.

Now if websites would stop using the headline 'PSN hacked Again' and people would actually read the story...

PSN wasnt hacked again. User info was not compromised. This was the web based password changer that allowed passwords to be changed using information that had previously been compromised.

Either way Sony took it down right away and is changing it.

Yeh the title is very misleading and sensational.

It makes it sound like their CC data was compromised again. When it was just reporting that Sony realized their password reset page was completely idiotic.

This is going to be an ongoing issue for Sony. I never believed they could "fix" this quickly and I suspect that this isn't a simple "fix" scenario. They are going to need to invest heavily in better infrastructure that can log and track intruders. PSN always felt thrown together and what we've seen suggests that is the case. Good Luck Sony. Maybe next year will be "The year of the PS3"

To be fair, it wasn't something like an unpatched service or open port.

It was pure stupidity.

  • To verify your identity and reset your password: supply us with your PSN ID and your birthday

  • Umm, weren't those two of the pieces of information that were stolen? And sitting in various lists on the Internet?

  • Face palm
